このアルバムの中で、一番ドラマチックな曲は3曲目の「Wings for Marie」と4曲目の「10,000Days」だろう。この2曲は、27年間（1万日）の闘病生活の末亡くなったメイナードの母に奉げるである。敬虔なキリスト教徒である母が常に彼を信じ支えてくれたおかげで、今の彼があると歌っている。APCの「Judith」では母を半身不随にした神への怒り、その神を崇めること止めない母への怒りを露にしたメイナードが、母の死を通じてやっと全てを整理したことが伺える。このアルバムというかTOOLの中で唯一メイナードのパーソナルな面が垣間見れる曲だと思う。

このアルバムはToolの中でも取っ付きにくい部類のアルバムではないだろうか?


聴き手の事や商業的な事など殆ど考えていないであろう本作はもはやアートの領域である。

特に、組曲的な構成になっている後半部分で我々リスナーは作品ときちんと向かい合うことを求められる。


ちょろっと聴いただけで本作を売ってしまうのは非常に勿体無い。


ソリッドでより各パートのコンビネーションを意識した、(そしてかなり凝りまくった)リフは聴き込むほど味が出る。


前作のような浮遊感や神秘的な感じが薄れてしまったのは個人的にはやや残念だが、細部まで作り込まれた作品というのは長く聴けるものだ。

LATERALUSに続く、Toolの5年ぶりのアルバムです。
まず内容と関係の無いところでは、ジャケットの凝り具合が半端じゃないです(汗)
デジパック版の上に、イラストの目のところに被るようにレンズまで付いてます。
（今後もこの仕様が続くかはわかりませんが…）
そして中ジャケも、もうTool以外の何者でも無いという、グロテスクながら、
何処か宗教的な雰囲気を醸し出すものです。

そして肝心なアルバムの内容ですが、やはりこちらもToolです(爆)
11曲で75分超ですから、今までのアルバムの中で最も一曲一曲が長いです。
また前作LATERALUSほど目立った激しさは影を潜めていますが、Animaに近いという印象もありません。
それと若干ながらエフェクティブな音の処理が多くなった気がします。

ただ少し辛口になると“似たような曲が多く、大して変り映えがしない”という見方も出来ますが、
アルバム全体からは円熟と貫禄が感じられます。
(でも個人的にはもうちょっと新しい面も見たかったですね…)

個人的にはやはり展開のメリハリが利いた5.The Potや、徐々に激しさを増していく、
実質ラストトラックのRight In Twoが好きですね。

そして最後になりますが、StinkfistやPARABOLA、TICKS&LEECHESのような、
適度なポップさを兼ね備えた曲は今回皆無です。
Tool好きには問題無いですが、はじめてToolを聴くという人には、LATERALUSの方がやはり良いと思います。
