【プロフィール】
1971年リンダ・ロンシュタットのバック・バンドで顔合わせしたグレン・フライ、バーニー・リードン、ランディ・マイズナー、ドン・ヘンリーの4人で結成。72年ファースト・シングル「テイク・イット・イージー｣、アルバム『イーグルス・ファースト』のヒットにより、一躍ウエスト・コースト・ロックの代表的な存在となる。74年3作目の『オン・ザ・ボーダー』完成後、レコーディングに参加していたドン・フェルダーが正式メンバーに。75年バーニー・リードンが脱退、代ってジョー・ウォルシュが加入。そして76年歴史的名盤『ホテル・カリフォルニア』をリリース。77年オリジナル・メンバーであったランディ・マイズナー脱退。ティモシー・Ｂ・シュミットが正式メンバーとなる。79年発表の『ロング・ラン』発表。80年ロング・ラン・ツアーを中心とした初のライヴ・アルバムをリリースするが、バンドは事実上休止状態に。82年5月正式に解散が発表される。

が、このOn the Borderです。
実際のどの曲も過去のアルバムよりか遙かにハード的になっています。力強いサウンドでギターも抜群です。ウエストコーストのハード編と申し上げたらよいでしょうか。

ここでは馬力のあるイーグルスがご堪能できます。
嬉しいアメリカ盤のCDです。

本作はイーグルスにとって、大きな転換点となったアルバムである。前作でワイルド・ウェストをイメージして極めた叙情あふれるカントリー路線から一転、エレクトリック・ロック路線が鮮明になる。ギタリストとしてドン・フェルダーが参加し、アルバム製作当初は前２作同様プロデューサー：グリン・ジョンズ、録音地：ロンドンだったのが途中からそれぞれビル・シムジック、ロサンゼルスに変更した点が大きな変化をもたらした。前作のようなアルバム全体を通じてのメッセージ性はなくなったが、個々の曲の質は悪くないと思う。ハードでも軽快な曲（Ｍ１、６）、アコギ入りの雄大なロック・バラード（Ｍ２）、バンジョー入りの曲（Ｍ３）、カントリー・フレーヴァーの曲（Ｍ４、７、８）、そしてラストの、ドンが切々と歌い上げるアコースティック・バラードの超名曲にして初の全米Ｎｏ．１ヒットとなった「わが愛の至上」等、収録曲は多彩である。今までになくロック色濃厚な、それ故個人的にはさほど成功しているとは思えない曲はＭ５、９ぐらい。ドン・ヘンリー、グレン・フライがリード・ヴォーカルの曲がやはり多いが、ランディ・マイズナーも２曲、バーニー・リードンも１曲リード・ヴォーカルを担当する。プロデューサーの交代等バンドの多難な時期に創作された曲の寄せ集めという見方ができるかもしれないが、個々の曲の質は決して悪くなく、並みのバンド以上の質を保っていることを繰り返し指摘しておきたい。間違いなくホテル・カリフォルニアに上りつめる道は本作の混沌の中にその出発点があるのである。

ｲｰｸﾞﾙｽといえば｢ﾎﾃﾙ･ｶﾘﾌｫﾙﾆｱ｣になってしまうのが世の常ではありますが、たった6枚しか出さなかったｵﾘｼﾞﾅﾙ･ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑの質の高さは、ﾋﾞｰﾄﾙｽﾞのそれに匹敵するものがあります。このｻｰﾄﾞ･ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑは、楽曲や詩の良さは当然(!)として、既に彼等の作品創りに対するｺﾝｾﾌﾟﾁｭｱﾙな姿勢が開花しています。ﾌﾟﾛﾃﾞｭｰｻｰの途中交代劇、よりﾍｳﾞｨｰなｻｳﾝﾄﾞ･ｱﾌﾟﾛｰﾁなど、彼等のその当時の｢生き様｣自体が、このｱﾙﾊﾞﾑにﾀﾞｲﾚｸﾄに反映されています。その名も｢ｵﾝ･ｻﾞ･ﾎﾞｰﾀﾞｰ(境界線上)｣!!!｡前作｢ならず者｣の様なﾄｰﾀﾙ･ｺﾝｾﾌﾟﾄ･ｱﾙﾊﾞﾑではなく、個々の素晴らしい小品が並ぶ作品ではありますが、｢お前は星を眺める事は出来ても、その輝きまでは理解出来ない奴。だけどもう何もかも過去の事!!今は新たな日に向かって、力一杯だよ!!!｣と始まる1曲目から、とにかく勢いが良い!!!。｢我が至上の愛｣で美しくまとめ上げるまで、人の｢生き様｣をﾊｰﾄﾞに表現しています。

人生に悩んでいたり、自分の方向性が見えなかったり、今まさに岐路に立っている人は、是非聴いて欲しい!。本当に、絶対、勇気が湧いてきます!!!。
ｲｰｸﾞﾙｽの本当の凄さ、素晴らしさは、こんな所にも有るんです。
