学園紛争のあおりで東大入試が中止となり、風邪を引き、足の爪をはがし、愛犬が死んでしまい、このところ全然ついてない薫クン（岡田裕介）のある一日を通して、青春の繊細な心理と行動、その機微を浮き彫りにしていく傑作青春映画。原作は庄司薫の芥川賞受賞小説で、森谷司郎監督は実験的とも感覚的ともいえる映像描写を駆使しながら青春の光と影を見事に描出。特に既成曲の使い方などうまく、当時の若者世相を知るよきテキストになっているが、それ以上に永遠普遍の青春の真理をついた、今の時代にも納得できるものになりえている。これがデビュー作の岡田裕介は、監督の命令で長靴の中に画鋲を入れられながら、片足をひきずり演技を通した。どこか甘ったるい彼の言動もまた、その後のノンポリ的若者像を巧みに先取りしているようでもある。なお彼が落書きするシーンでは、イラストレーターで映画監督でもある和田誠が、わざと下手くそに見えるよう左手で描いたのだそうだ。(増當竜也）
