イギリスのプログレバンド、カーヴド・エアの4th。1973作
いったんバンドを離れたダリル・ウェイに代わり、若き日のエディ・ジョブソンが参加。
そのことからも現在ではエディファンからの人気が高い作品であり、
バンドのディスコグラフィー中でも異色のアルバムといえるだろう。
サウンドは初期の頃に比べるとずいぶんすっきりと整理されてきていて
軽やかで優雅な演奏に乗るソーニャー・クリスティーナの歌声が美しい。
エディの艶やかなピアノはやはり素晴らしく、またヴァイオリンの方もダリルに負けじと
テクニカルに弾きまくっていて、このアルバムをクラシカルに彩っている。
前作「ファンタスマゴリア」とともにバンドの代表作と呼ぶにふさわしい出来だ。

７３年発表の４作目。プログレでは非常に人気の高い当時１７歳だったエディ・ジョブソンのデビュー盤として長らくＣＤ化が望まれていた作品であり、エアの最高傑作と評価する人も多い名盤。前作で主要メンバーの３人が脱退してしまい、グループはほぼ解散に近い状態にまでなってしまったが、残ったソーニャとマイク・ウェッジウッドはエディ・ジョブソン(k、vln)、カービー・グレゴリー(g)、ジム・ラッセル(dr) を加えて本作を発表した。キーボードとヴァイオリンという主要楽器と作曲という基幹を支えていたダリル・ウェイとフランシス・モンクマンの２人の役割を一人でこなしたエディの評価は本作でも非常に高く、技術的にも水準が高い。しかしながら本作での主役は明らかにギターのカービーだろう。ハード・ロックに近い硬質なプレイはグループに活気を与えているし、従来のグルーブにはなかったドライヴ感を加えている。
１．はギターのカッティングが印象的なポップなナンバー。何となくポップ期のキャラバンに通じる明るい雰囲気を持っており、途中のシンセ、ギターのリードという流れもそれを感じさせる。何にしても従来のエアではあり得ないストレートなロック曲だ。２．はトラッド・フォークっぽい曲だが、屈折したコード進行とソーニャの歌声が悩ましい。モジュレーションを活かしたシンセの音色も個性的だ。３．はクラシカルなピアノが印象的なソーニャとエディの共作による、この時期のエアの代表曲。ルネッサンスに通じる雰囲気を持ちながら、エアらしさも兼ね備えた美しく、ドラマチックな曲である。中盤はエディの独壇場。５．ではエディのヴァイオリンも登場する。ダリル・ウェイと比べるとやや線が細いが、神経質そうな演奏はまた違った味わいがある。８．もこの時期の代表曲といえるドラマチックな曲であり、陰鬱で美しいメロディはエアの良い部分を摘出したかのようだ。名曲。
グループは本作の後、一旦解散となり、マイクはキャラバンへ移籍、カービーとジムはストレッチを結成。エディはロキシー・ミュージックに移籍した。

本作はEddie Jobsonのプロデビュー盤であり、カーヴドエアの最高傑作である。
興味深いことに、Eddieが参加するアルバムは、他のミュージシャンもその影響を受けてなのか、非常にハイセンスな作品に仕上がる場合が多い。エアカットも同様のことが言えるだろう。
　昨年9月、実に20数年ぶりにステージに立ったその場所は、なんとロシアであった。そのとき、自身の作品をピアノとエレクトリックヴァイリンでメドレーで演奏した。その中の一曲がMetamorphosisのピアノソロであった。
　本年1月のニューヨークでのEddieのバンド、UKZのコンサートでも、同じくメドレーの中の一曲として演奏された。
　そして、2009年6月、Eddieにとって30年ぶりとなる日本公演においてEddieによる生の演奏が聴くことができた。本作からは演奏されなかったものの、記念すべきEddieのデビュー盤である。
　　本作についてのレビューはすでにすぐれたものがあり、補足的に記した。
