The louder, clearer sound afforded by producer Shadow Morton makes the Dolls come on even brasher on their second and last album. In Too Much Too Soon finds their mix of aggression and humor intact--not just "in spite of" an increased reliance on covers, either, because David Johansen's taste in remakes expresses a lot about this music nut's crazed, loving worldview. Who else in '70s rock could make a wacked-out doo wop novelty like "Stranded in the Jungle" into an important personal statement? The Stones' late-'74 slopbucket take on "Ain't Too Proud to Beg" suggests that they'd heard the Dolls rewire the Philly-soul "Showdown." And while few of the punks who followed were to make as deep as claim on reality as the buzzsawing "Human Being" does, though many were to chip off pieces of the manic "Who Are the Mystery Girls?" --Rickey Wright

60年代のR&Bやヒットポップスと、70年代のパンクを、間をぶった切って直接つないで溶接しちゃったようなサウンドが楽しめる。
オリジナルもカバー（カデッツやソニーボーイウイリアムソンなど）も含めて、実にポップでルーツへの愛情が感じられるのがいい。そういう意味ではストーンズのファーストに近いイメージかも。
本作がオリジナルメンバー最後のアルバムになってしまったことが本当に残念。

New York Dollsにはロックン・ロールの全てがある。
長期に渡って活動を続けられるバンドも、それはそれで素晴らしいのだが、刹那の初期衝動を一瞬にしてブチまけて散っていくのがロックン・ロールの美しい姿ではないだろうか？
New York Dollsのオリジナル・アルバムは、1973年にリリースされたケバいジャケットの1st「New York Dolls」と、1974年にリリースされた、この2nd「Too Much Too Soon」の2枚のみ（再結成後のアルバムは無視する）。
しかし、この2枚があればNew York Dollsを楽しむには充分なはずだ。
「星５つは？」と問われれば、やはり1stに軍配が上るのだが、この2ndには「熟れすぎた果実」のような独特の魅力がある。
ブルースもモータウンもマージー・ビートも、とにかくメンバーが好きな音楽を全部ぶつけ合って出来上がった音楽がここにある。
本当に奇跡のようなバンドが最後に放った美しい作品だ。

「早すぎたパンク、遅すぎたグラムロック」
という、あまりにも有名な”通り名”で聞かずに過ぎている人も多いのではないだろうか？
しかしジョニー・サンダースのうねるロックンロールギターと
個性のあるデヴィッド・ヨハンセンのヴォーカル
まとまった演奏力が全体を通して飽きさせない
メロディだけ聞く人には多少飽きるかもしれないが

ストーンズ、パティ・スミス、エアロスミスなどの
ロックンロールスタイルが好きな人は必聴。
セックスピストルズの「勝手にしやがれ」のギターは
ジョニーサンダースが弾いているという噂もあるので
聞き比べてみるのもいいかも知れない。
