この時期のシカゴは、レコード会社のシングルヒットの狙いもあって、特にアメリカ西海岸の
売れ線サウンドの色が濃かったように思います。

「１９」は、当時、バラードライターとして有名のダイアン・ウォーレンなど、外部ライターからの曲が目立ちます。
レコード会社のシングルヒット狙い、という意向が強く働いたか、８０年代後半のアメリカの風潮
「パワー・バラード」と呼ばれる商業ロック路線を地でいったような内容です。
ですので、内容は多少甘いラブソング主体ですが、むしろ初めてのリスナーの方が、聴きやすいと思います。
この作品あたりから、AOR／パワーバラード路線で売りたがるレコード会社とバンド側に溝ができますが、
痛手はオリジナル・メンバーだったドラムスのダニー・セラフィンが解雇の形でバンドを去ったことでした。
今作からのシングルカットは何と言っても「ルック・アウェイ」、D・ウォーレン作でビル・チャンプリンの歌が
ビルボード１９８９年度の年間シングルチャート１位を獲得した曲となりました。
ビルは他にもシングル「アイ・ドント・ウォナ・リヴ・ウィズアウト・ユー」のバラードでも活躍、
若手のジェイソンも「ホワット・カインド・オブ・ア・マン」などでヒットを飛ばしていますので、
ビルとジェイソン、８２年、８６年加入の２人の新メンバーの存在を前面に押し出そうとしてるアルバムに思えます。
中心メンバーのロバート・ラムは、「アイ・スタンド・アップ」と「ヴィクトリアス」で相変わらず我が道を行っています。

往年の硬派なブラス・ロック・バンドだったシカゴからは一番遠いところに位置するアルバムですが、
僕が聴いたのは１８歳の頃なので、やはり思い入れもあります。内容は良いと思います。
毎度評判のジャケット・アート、「シカゴ１９」は今みると古くて粗いCGで現代社会の混沌を表現しているようですね。

ちなみに今作は０６年のシカゴ新作「XXX」発売にともなうリイシュー発売なので、
ライノによるリマスターではありません。
