　Ｄ・フェイゲンの音楽との出会いはジャズから始まったそうである。中でも４０年代のスイングは基本で、それは「先進的ながらリラックスした音楽」とのことである。それが、このアルバムのコンセプトにもなったそうな。
　偏見を除いて聴けばこのＣＤには彼の作曲キャリアの１０本の指に入るよい曲が含まれている。多くの人がハードボイルドＳＦでありロマンチックでもある「スノウバウンド」の詞を褒めるだろう。「オン・ザ・デューンズ」はアレンジなしでよい作曲だ。イントロの着想の良さ、流れるような和声は(彼が範とする)アメリカ音楽の大作曲家たちの足元くらいには及んだかもしれない。
　そしてこれに「完璧に１人で、ナルシスティックにやった」と本人が言うホーン・アレンジメントが被さってくる。なお、ハネたリズムはスタックスソウルの再現とも、ミラー楽団等の４０年代ダンス音楽の今日的解釈とも(当時)いわれた。私は後者だと思う。
　これ以降も、これ以前にも聴けないサウンドがあるという意味で、バンド(スティーリー・ダン)の方が好きだという人も聴く価値が十分ある名盤です。

本作がリリースされたのが'93年。誰もが絶賛した名盤"Nightfly"から10年を経てリリースされるD.フェイゲンの2ndソロ作品という事で勢い込んで購入したのですが、何か違和感を感じたのを覚えています。
"Nightfly"のコンセプトと本作のコンセプトは全く違うものですし、"あの感触をもう一度"と願うのもリスナーの身勝手というものでしょう。寧ろ、個人的にはその再生装置としてバックに徹していた数々の凄腕ミュージシャンに興味があった、というのも偽らざる所です。
勿論、本作はその"延長線上に位置する"と言われればそうでしょう。この独特の曲調(コード進行って言うのでしょうか)、想像したとおりに進まないメロディ・ライン(^^;、やはりD.フェイゲン作品に違いありません。バックの布陣については生憎知らないミュージシャンばかりではありますが、その部分に拘るなら(私自身)この作品は手にしていなかったでしょう。
緻密さとか完璧さとか、とかくスティーリー・ダンの後期作品からのイメージが強く、私自身も心地良さとは別にD.フェイゲンにどことなく"冷ややかさ"のようなものを感じることもありますが、元々、ジャズ・フリークである彼が"生の音楽の凄さ・面白さ"を知らない筈もないでしょう。
そういう意味では、どのようなD.フェイゲン作品にも共通するのは気持ちのいい揺れ(スウィング)感覚なのだなぁ、という思いに至った作品でもあります。

まあ、アーティストなんてものは巫女みたいなもんで・・・

一流のミュージシャンほど先を行き過ぎて、時代のほうがついていけなかったりするわけで・・・

カマキリアドのコンセプトも当時としては先走りすぎていたわけで・・・

まぁ、ゴア元副大統領はノーベル平和賞をとったわけで・・・

ということで、ドナルド・フェイゲンのサウンドもこのアルバムのコンセプトも再評価されていいのではないかと・・・
