前アルバム『By The Way』以来4年ぶりとなるニューアルバムは初の2枚組。

2枚組の大作をリリースするまでに4年間のキャリアの中断があったことは、バンドとしてのレッチリの成長についての問題を暗示しているようだ。当初はなんと、3枚組にできるほどの曲をレコーディングしていたという。トラブルメイカーとしての悪ガキぶりを売り物にパンクとファンクの融合の可能性を携え、80年代のメインストリームに切り込むオルタナティブ・ロック旋風に手を貸した彼らだが、20年ほどの歳月を経た今、パンクのエネルギッシュで生意気な部分はほぼ完全に姿を消し、ファンクのほとばしるようなリズムはこの2時間に渡る28曲のアルバムではかなり抑えられている。レッチリらしい男っぽく、時にマッチョなエッジは失われてはいないが、そのあたりは故意に控えめにして熟成した作品としている。ずっとメロウで時に内省的となっていて、クロスオーバー・ヒットとなった「Under the Bridge」に代表されるポップスの特性はないかもしれないが、ディスク1では「Snow」、「Wet Sand」、ジャズのようにクールな「Hey」といった曲が立派に花ひらいている。

一聴しただけでは、よさはわからないかもしれない。
特に、２８曲という新曲として聴くには膨大な曲数が納められているため、
一曲一曲が耳になじむまで聞き込むのには、少し時間がかかるかもしれない。
（私は、そうでした。始めは、ちょっと残念？なんて思いました）

でも、何度もじっくり聞いているうちに、大好きな一枚（２枚）になりました。
どんどん、「あれっ、これってこんないい曲だっけ！？私の耳は節穴だったか！」という気持ちになりました。

始めに聴いたときに、好きになった曲より、後から気付いた曲のほうが、より愛着のある「好き」な曲になると思います。

Red Hot Chili Peppersが新アルバムを出すたびに、
「がっかり」「今度こそ昔みたいな曲が聴けると思ってたのに」という声を聴くけれど、
どうして、彼らの変化を受け入れないのだろうか？と不思議になる。
人は、年月を重ねることで変化していく。それを止めることはできない。
激しい曲が欲しいなら、「Give it away」などなど…がある。
年をとって、新しい経験を重ねて、考え方や感じ方が変わっていけば、
音楽性が変わるのは当たり前のことではないのだろうか？
（小手先で作っているのではないのだから）

現在のRed Hot Chili Peppersのいい曲が、たくさん詰まっています。

2枚組み、28曲と特大サイズのアルバム。
質より量とかじゃなく質も量も両方いい。
2枚通して聴いても、疲れないし、初めて聴くのに馴染んでる。
でも、新鮮。
個人的にはMARSのほうが好きかなぁ。
一言でいうならば、新品なのに履いた瞬間馴染んでるジーンズみたい。
これから何万回と聴いてもきっと色あせないアルバムになると思います。
これはお買い得ですよ！！

ベストが1枚だったのに次に出すアルバムが二枚組なんてどういうこと？
と不思議に思ってしまいましたが、
雑誌のインタビューでいい曲ばかりで収まりきらなかった、
といっていたのが良く分かります。
あるパートが巧い、のではなく全員が巧すぎるのです。
微妙な曲調の曲でもバックの演奏が素晴らしいので
どの曲も聞き応えがあります。
特にジョンとチャドがすごいかな、という感じです。
いつもはアンソニーとフリーが特にすごいと思うのですが、
今回は逆ですね。もちろん全員すごいんですが。

ジョンのすさまじいソロが最高の「Dani California」はもちろん、
レッチリバラードの集大成、「Desecration Smile」のほか
バンドの一体感の素晴らしい「Charlie」や
セクシーなギターの「She's　Only　18」、
フリーのベースが炸裂する「Torture」「Warlocks」、
チャドの巧みなドラムの光る「21th Century」など、
もういい曲を挙げたらキリがありません。

はじけてるわけじゃない、でも聴いていて気持ちの良いアルバム、
「音楽を通じて他の人達と一体になるだけじゃなくて、
世界そのものと繋がりを感じるアルバム」とアンソニーは
雑誌のインタビューでいっていますが、
このバンドの一体感は今まで苦労を重ねてきた
彼らでしか出来ない素晴らしいこと。

カリフォルニア３部作の最終作にふさわしい名盤であると思います。
是非このバンドがまとまっていることの素晴らしさを感じてください。
