前作、前々作にあたる広がりのある愛くるしい叙事詩『The Soft Bulletin』と『Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots』では、人生で人が直面する避けられない死を扱っていた。だが新作で、このオクラホマ・シティのアート扇動家たちは、コンセプト・アルバムのアプローチを捨て、まわれ右をした。彼らの初期の特徴だった取り散らかったサイケデリアを70年代のファンク・パーティを通じて取りこみ、なおかつ、ありきたりなものを崇高なものへ昇華させる方法を見つけている。「Pompeii(邦題「ポンペイの黄昏」)」ではシド・バレット時代のピンク・フロイドを凌ぎ、「Wizard Turns On(邦題「巨大な銀の閃光灯を点灯し、狼人間のモカシンを穿くノってる魔法使い」)」では、幻想的な飛行機の上でぐらぐらとバランスを取っていても。そして、このバンドが風刺漫画のようにピンクのウサギに宇宙のシャボン玉を吹きかけていると信じたい誘惑に駆られるだろうが、危険な状態にあるのはあなた自身なのだ。『At War With the Mystics(邦題『アット・ウォー・ウィズ・ザ・ミスティックス(神秘主義者との交戦』)』は、ジョージ・ブッシュ、ブッシュ政権、自爆テロ、うわべだけで中身のないスターたちを、似たような囚人服を着た罪人だとひとまとめにして、彼らへの告発を知的に探っている。「Sound of Failure/It's Dark...Is it Always This Dark?(邦題「しくじりの音/暗い闇…いつだってこんなに暗いのか?」)」のような曲は大胆に、ポップ・カルチャーの歌姫グウェン・ステファニやブリトニー・スピアーズに挑戦しているが、最初におやすみのキスを音を立てて贈ることは忘れていない。「Free Radicals(邦題「フリー・ラディカルズ~自由急進主義者達(自爆犯を説き伏せようとするクリスマス骸骨の幻想)」)」は貴重なソウルの騒乱で、絶頂期のプリンスを思わせるが、実はデベンドラ・ベンハートの夢に奇妙に影響を受け、潜在的なテロリストたちの心に向けた真っ直ぐな鋭い矢だ。フレーミング・リップスを率いる元帥ウェイン・コインは、人間の性質を鋭く観察するが、さらに鋭いソングライターでもあり、このアルバムは彼の最高作品であり、もっともバラエティい富む作品となっている

恥ずかしながらこのアルバムを聴くまでFlaming Lipsの存在を知りませんでした。
(前作は４年前かぁ･･･)今まで知らなかったのが悔やまれます。
試聴とジャケでピンときて買ってみたら、スゴイ！
ジャンル分けなんて蹴散らしてしまっている独自の世界観、音、
思わず吸い込まれてしまいました。
自分の中の新たな世界が広がったような、発見できた嬉しさで一杯です！

素直にいい音楽だなぁと思います。

温かくて骨太さのあるサウンドの質感が本当に心地いいですね。沈んだ気分も持ち上げてくれるような不思議な優しい魅力のある音像です。カラフルな刺激はあってもクールな響きは失っていない、とても洗練された無駄のないアレンジでもあると言えるんではないでしょうか。

とても聴きやすいですし、ポップスはポップスなんですが、俗っぽく埋もれてはいない新鮮な広がりや奥深い余韻をもった作品だと思います。歌もコーラスワークも素晴らしいです。

自分にっては「The Soft Bulletin」と比べても遜色のない、とてもお気に入りの一枚です。

ひとつには、キングクリムゾンの１枚目を思い出すせいもあると思うのですが。
でもとてもＰＯＰだし。妙に耳に残るフレーズの数々。
it over takes me, it over takes me , it over takes me ...
やっぱりこの感覚を言葉で表すのは難しい〜

最近このバンドを知って、知らなかった時間を損したな、と思います。
