ペーター・ハントケの脚本、ユルゲン・クニーパーの音楽、無名の頃のナスターシャ･キンスキー､ベンダースの走る列車の映像、その全てが美しい。ゲーテの原作と登場人物は重なるが、そんなことはどうでもいい。当時の西ドイツの人々が思っていた今自分たちがどこに向かっているのか、その不安感をラストで主人公と共に共感しよう。
でも２００９年に初めて観る人たちには理解できないでしょうね。

ゲーテの古典が原案とはおこがましい。青年と呼ぶにはもう遅い、禿げかけの「書きたくても書けない」作家志望のニート男。マザコンでもある彼は、母親に促され、自分の言葉を見つける旅に出る（金策だけでなく、荷造りまでママがしてくれた。ホテル台帳には「作家」と書いた）。ほとんどコメディでしか成立しなさそうな設定だが、大真面目に撮ってある。映像は美しい。
