　小津安二郎を敬愛するヴィム・ヴェンダースが、小津の映画を通じて親しんでいた東京という町を、彼なりの視点で撮影したドキュメンタリー映画です。
　この映画が撮影されたのが１９８３年ということで、当然のことながら、この当時の東京には小津の映画の中に描かれているような古き良き時代の町並みといったようなものは残っていません。そこにあるのはパチンコ屋にゴルフ練習場、路上でツイストを踊る若者や竹の子族といった、その当時の風俗によって作られた都会の喧騒だけです。

　そんな当時の東京の町に対して、ヴェンダースは持ち前のこの上なく静かな視線を投げかけ、彼のカメラに映る東京をこの上なく冷静に淡々と記録していきます。その視線の中には、東京という町に対する安易な憧憬や悲哀、そしてこういったドキュメンタリー映画が概して陥りがちな安っぽい文明批判などは微塵もありません。彼の目はただ克明に当時の風俗を描写していくだけです。

　そんなヴェンダースですが、この映画撮影中、パチンコ屋とゴルフ練習場には何か特別な興味を引かれたようで、彼はこの映画の中で、我々にとってはごく日常的なこの二つの娯楽に対して、哲学的ともいえる独自の見解を示しています。その見解は、確かにいわれてみれば「なるほど」と納得するものではあるのですが、パチンコとゴルフ練習場という題材があまりにも我々には身近なので、「こんなものに何もそこまで・・・」とこのシーンだけは見ていてつい笑いがこみ上げてしまいました。

　ここ数年も「ブエナ・ビスタ・ソシアル・クラブ」「ソウル・オブ・マン」など、優れたドキュメンタリー作品を撮っているヴェンダースですが、そんなドキュメンタリーの名手ともいえる彼が得記録した東京は、一度見るだけの価値は十分にあると思います。

ヴェンダースが小津安二郎監督の「東京物語」に捧げたオマージュ。
1983年に東京で開催されたドイツ映画際のため来日した際に撮影したフィルムを元に作られたエッセイ映画で、1985年に公開された。
なぜか、フランス語でヴェンダース自身が語り手となっている。

舞台は東京と神奈川県鎌倉市で、「東京物語」から30年経った日本がどのように変わったかが、実に正確に捕らえられている。
小津安二郎監督作品のスタッフや、笠智衆などがヴェンダース自身からインタヴューを受けて出演。

今、この「東京画」から25年経過して、逆に四半世紀前の日本を観るという点からも興味深い。
私自身は、十数年前に大学生の時にこの映画を観て、何を言っているのか正直理解できてなかった。
まず、小津安二郎作品を全く観ていなかったし、原宿の竹の子族がなぜ「アメリカに影響された人々」なのかも分からなかった。
昔の日本の知識をそれなりに得て、「東京物語」も観た今なら、ヴェンダースが1983年の東京で何を観たのか、何を考えたのかが分かる。

この映画は、単品で観てもいいけど、「東京物語」と是非併せてみてほしい。
四半世紀前の日本「東京画」と、半世紀前の日本「東京物語」。
日本人として、この2本は絶対に観ておきたい。
