　このアルバムのCD化は私が知っている限りでは、80年代前半に最初に出た国内盤、ロリンズのPRESTIGEのCOMPLETE BOX、OJC盤、DCC盤そして3年くらい前に出た紙ジャケ国内盤、そして本作。これらのCDはすべて聴いていますが、まだまだいっぱいあります。この中でもスタジオの空気感、各楽器の生々しさ、演奏者の呻き声、音圧etc.とどれをとっても御大RVG(ルディ・ヴァン・ゲルダー、オリジナルの録音技師)自らがディジタルリマスターした本作がダントツで優れています。

　本作以外で聴くに値するのはDCC盤とかろうじてOJC盤のみで、あとはハッキリ言ってとるに足らないものばかりですね(涙）。それでは何故同じアルバムを聴き続けるのか？それはオリジナルアナログ盤の物凄い音を聴いているからなのです。前に出たCDは不発でも、今回のはオリジナル盤に匹敵する立派な音になっているのではないかと、期待を持ってしまうからなのです。しかもオビには「何ビットでディジタルリマスターした迫真の音！」なんて平気で書いているしね。

　話は変わって、4年前にDECCA時代のローリングストーンズの一連のアルバムがABKCOから発売されたとき、私も何枚か買いましたが、その素晴らしい音に腰を抜かすほどビックリしたものでした。そのころある雑誌に現ABKCO社長のジョディ・クライン氏のインタビューが載りましたが、とても興味深いものでした。クライン氏によると、リマスターに時間がかかったのは、音質的な決定版を作りたかったのと、中途半端な音のCDを何度も小出しにして、ファンに迷惑をかけたくなかったそうなんです。

　たいへん立派な心意気ですが、私に言わせればこれがあたりまえ。中途半端な音のCDを何度も小出しにして、ファンに迷惑をかけまくっている、わが国のレコード会社のジャズ部門の担当者は、ジョディさんの爪の垢を煎じて飲まれてはいかが？

ソニーロリンズの名盤として有名なこの「サキソフォンコロッサス」はジャズ入門者の方にとって最適の一枚だと推薦できます。まず何と言っても、セントトーマスとモリタートの二曲がとっても聴きやすくて良いです。テナーサックスの名人ソニーロリンズのメロディアスなプレイも見事です。私なんぞは、もう何十年も聴いていますが未だに聞き飽きることがないほどです。こういうのが本物のジャズというモノです。バックを務めるミュージシャン達も腕達者が揃っています。まずはドラムスのマックス・ローチ。速くて正確なリズムに、重たいバックビートに変拍子。聞き惚れるしかないですね。この人主役のロリンズに全然負けていません。ピアノのトミー・フラナガンも上手い。決して出しゃばることがないが、リリカルで美しいメロディを小出しにする。ベースのダク・ワトキンスも渋いボトムキープをする。ほれぼれとさせられる縁の下の力持ちぶりです。もう只じっくりと聴いて頂きたいです。ジャズを知りたいという方は、是非これを外さないでくださいね。

自由自在のアドリブとリズム感を十二分に酔えるアルバム。「St. Thomas」と「Moritat」だけでなく、「You Don't Know What Love Is」も名演奏。サイドのドラムスとピアノとの息もぴったりでほれぼれさせられる。まさに名盤。
