まずはジャケットが秀逸。たいしたこと無いように思えますが、プレスティッジのジャケットは超テキトーなデザインが多いのです。（例：ワーキン）

そしてイフ・アイ・ワー・ア・ベルのチャーミングなメロディ、ウッディン・ユーでのノリ　バラード2曲の気軽さ。タイトル通りのリラクシンが堪能できます。

いわゆるマラソンセッションの中からのセレクションですが、この選曲こそが傑作ならしめている面もあります。もしこの選曲に、「イット・ネヴァー・エンタード・・・・」なんかが入っていたら、いくら名演でもムードぶちこわしです。

そういう意味で奇跡的な名盤といえると思います

1956年10月26日の有名なプレスティッジのマラソン・セッションで録音された4部作の一つ。

マイルスは不遇時代にめんどうを見てくれたプレスティッジにこの頃金銭的な不満を持っていて、それが原因でコロンビアと契約することになる。それが1956年のことでこの段階でマイルスはプレスティッジとの間にこの年のおしまいまでにLPにして4枚分作品を創ることを約束していた。これをわずか2日間で25曲、しかもほとんどがワン・テイクでOKという脅威のレコーデイングを行う。これが有名なプレスティッジでのマラソン・セッションで、プレスティッジ最後の4部作(クッキン・ワーキン・スティーミン・リラキシン)だ。

マイルスはプレスティッジに16枚のアルバムを残しているが、この時の充実度は他に例を見ない驚異的なものだったと言えるだろう。

面白いのはプレスティッジのその後の対応だ。これから益々マイルスの人気が上がることを予想したプレスティッジは、その録音を年に1枚という超スローペースで徐々に世に送り出したのだ。まず、『クッキン』を1957年に、次の『リラクシン』を1958年3月に、次の『ワーキン』を1960年2月に、最後の『スティーミン』を1961年9月に出したのだ。この戦略はハード・バップからモードへと移り変わるマイルスの傑作がコロンビアから出される中大成功をおさめたのだ。

マイルスだけでなくジョン・コルトレーンを語る場合においてもこの4部作は一つとして外せない大傑作なことは言うまでも無い。マイルスはこの時のレギュラー・クインテットを結成して約1年。特にジョン・コルトレーンの成長がこの4部作を不動のものとしている。これを聴かずして何を聴くのか、と言える作品だ。

マイルス・デイビスの最初のクィンテットによる不滅の４部作の２作目。スタンダード中心の編成となった。２曲目のYou're My Everythingはスタートでミスがあったためか、マイルスがレッド・ガーランドに指示を入れている。最後のWoody 'N Youのみトランペットがオープンで、あとはすべてミュートだ。マイルスはフランク・シナトラやナット・キング・コールなどのボーカリストからも大きな影響を受けたと自認している。それゆえかこれらのミュートサウンドはやさしく甘く響く。マイルスの歌を聴けるアルバムだ。
