60年に実際に起きた海難事故を元に、船乗りを夢見る少年たちと教官の信頼関係を描いた青春映画。航海へ出た12人の少年と船長を含む4人のクルーたちが、巨大な嵐に遭遇する。“HAPPY CINEMA TIME~スクール&スポーツ”。

海洋学校にやってきた12人の若き訓練生と出航したアルバトロス号だが、無常にも“ホワイト・スコール”と呼ばれる伝説の暴風雨に襲われてしまう…。リドリー・スコットが監督・製作指揮をとり、1996年日本公開された作品。

尊敬できる船長。
友情。
アクシデント。
冒険。
そして、別れを告げる間もない突然の別れ・・・。

航海実習中のアメリカのヨットで、若者が経験する多くのこと。
これだけのことをこのわずかな時間に凝縮することができた素晴らしい映画でした。

中でも、当時、敵対関係にあったキューバの軍艦が臨検しようとして乗り込んで来て、彼らをキューバへ連れ去ろうとしたところへ、アメリカ第七艦隊の船影が現れるシーンは印象に残っています。
ヨットの船長が、「どうする？我が！第七艦隊はもう、君たちに気づいているぞ！」と言うと、キューバ兵たちは急に慌てて、彼らを開放して去っていく。腹いせに船長を銃で殴りながらも・・・。
（この「第七艦隊」の前に、「我が！」をつけるところがミソですね（笑）。）
これこそが、国民と軍とのあるべき姿だと思いました。

大好きな映画です。
初めて観たのは、航海に出た青年たちと同じ年齢の頃。
非日常の中で、人間の弱さをイヤと言うほど見せつけられ、考え、強さ、優しさを身につけていく。
同じ視線で観たこの映画は、いつまでも私の心にずっしりと居座っています。
今は、みんなで一つのことに夢中になっていた学生の頃、色んなことに悩みながらも、一歩ずつ進んでいたあの頃を思い出しています。
