私が勝手に「天国もの」あるいは「天使もの」と呼んでいる一群の映画がある。
幽霊や天使が下界の人間とコンタクトをとる事により物語が生まれる映画である。

例えば、「ゴースト ニューヨークの幻」「ＡＮＧＥＬ−Ａ」「ベルリン・天使の詩」「異人た
ちの夏」「椿山課長の七日間」等々、古今東西数え上げるときりがないほど存在する。
他の芸術だと表現しにくく、映画だと比較的容易に表現できる主題だからかなと思っている。

この天国ものにあって、「天国から来たチャンピオン」は元祖であり、コメディとして一級品
だと思う。また「HEAVEN CAN WAIT」という原題と邦題とは大きく異なるが、両方とも巧い
題名であり、両方のタイトルを合わせると大体のストーリーの骨格が推し量れるのが面白い。

またこの映画は、企業の環境問題やマイノリティへの対応、コンプライアンスといった現代に
通用する社会問題も包含しており、この作品を色褪せさせない要因である。そしてラストの
シーンは、説明を避けてシンプルであり、それだけにいつまでもいつまでも心に残り続ける。

さて、ウォーレン・ビーティは「俺たちに明日はない」が出世作であるがどちらかというと、
この「天国から来たチャンピオン」の方が、彼に似合っているように感じるがどうでしょう？
