今年もっともフレッシュなカントリーのアルバムはナッシュビルではなく、なんとニューヨークから飛びだした。冴えないがどこか暗示的なリトル・ウィリーズという名の単発バンドの作品だ。ウィリー・ネルソンに敬意を表してこう名乗った5人組は、大西部のスイング・バンドを聞き込んでおり、長い手足の一流ミュージシャンたちをバックに、催眠術に誘われるような最高の女性シンガーがフロントを務めている。その眠たげな女性ボーカルも、際だつ彼女のピアノも、驚くほどノラ・ジョーンズに似ている。それもそのはず、まさしくこれはジョーンズ本人で、ブルースにおけるカントリーの一面を探っているのだ。このグループの他のメンバーはリー・アレキサンダー(ベース)、ジム・カンピロンゴ(エレキ・ギター)、リチャード・ジュリアン(ギター、ヴォーカル)、ダン・ライザー(ドラム)。2003年、ニューヨークのロウアー・イーストサイドにあるリビング・ルームで、自分たちが子供時代に耳にして楽しんでいたクラシックなアメリカ音楽を演奏するために結成したものだった。だから活動は控えめで、商業的な期待をせずにレコーディングとプロモーションを地味に行っている。本作には、心がうずくほど甘い「Easy as the Rain」を始めとするオリジナルと、ハンク・ウィリアムズ「I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive」ウィリー・ネルソン「I Gotta Get Drunk」や「Nightlife」、クリス・クリストファーソン「Best of All Possible Worlds」、タウン・ヴァン・ザント「No Place to Fall」、そしてリバー&ストラー「Love Me」(エルヴィス・プレスリーで有名)のカバーを収録。このアルバムは隅々まで、わずかに酔っているような、酒場の専属バンドがクラブで生演奏をしているような感触を行き渡らせている。特に「Lou Reed」はダークなロッカーが参加した可能性のある"牛転がし"(牛を転倒させるいたずら)のおもしろおかしい武勇伝だ。その卓越した音楽の才能だけでなく、心の奥底にあった音楽を演奏する喜びを思い出した演奏者たちの、あふれるような高揚感が聞き手にも伝わってくる優れた1枚。

あいかわらず、聴く者の心をとらえて離さないコケットリーと、しなやかな力強さにあふれている。もうひとりのヴォーカリスト、リチャード・ジュリアンも渋くて魅力的。

全体のサウンドはけっこうラフに作られているが、その辺もあいまって、この人たちが本当にカントリーを好きなことがよく伝わる出来だと思う。

ハンク・ウィリアムスの（２）は、ザ・バンドを思わせる音のきしみを感じさせる、いい仕上がり。

プレスリー（リーバー＆ストーラー作）の（３）は、ノラの歌も素敵だが、ジョン・ドライデンのオルガンが実に良い味を出してます。

ウィリー・ネルソンの（８）では、ジム・カンピロンゴが快調にギターを弾きまくっており、ごきげんです。

（９）は、リチャード・ジュリアンのヴォーカルに魅力があり、グラム・パーソンズとエミルー・ハリスのヴァージョン（アルバム『ＧＰ』に収録）よりもいいと思う。このニガくてセツない曲は、アメリカの男たち（女たちも？）の精神的な原風景を見事に写しているような気がするが、いかがなものだろうか。カントリー・ソングの典型的なパターンといえばそれまでですが。

その他のカヴァー曲も、メンバーのオリジナル作品４曲も、それぞれ魅力的だ。

ニュー・ヨークのミュージシャンたちが、ノラ・ジョーンズと一緒に作り上げたカントリー・ポップスとして、冷ややかにとらえる向きもあるようだが、そうした見方を超える力強さと親密な魅力を持つ作品であり、時の流れに耐えて生き残る、いいアルバムだと思います。

国内盤はＣＣＣＤなので、購入するなら、こちらのUS盤がおすすめです。

もうすでにご存知の方も多いことでしょうが、
ノラ・ジョーンズ初のバンド活動ということで
アルバムを買って聞いてみました。

ノラが持っているJAZZ要素が聞きたい方は
ノラのアルバムを聞くほうがオススメ
（個人的には聞いてみたら好みがそちらだったので☆4つです）。
あくまでも『バンド』サウンドなんです。
もちろん、カントリーが好きな方には
むしろこのアルバムのほうがオススメです！

少しゆるりとした自然なグルーブに
聞いてるほうも力が抜けてくる感じ。
お昼ごはんを食べた後、ゆっくり午後のお茶をしながら
夕暮れまで楽しむ…
そんなときにぜひこのアルバムを^^

ノラ・ジョーンズがピアノ＆ボーカルで参加してるバンドです（彼女以外のボーカル曲もあり）。それと以前ノラジョーンズ＆ハンサムバンド？にベース＆ソングライティングで参加していたリー・アレキサンダーがプロデュースをしています。曲はウィリーネルソンの曲なんかを演ってる事からも分かる通り、カントリー＆ジャジーなものが中心です。私は15年くらい前に流行ったカウボーイ・ジャンキーズがジャズっぽく演ったらこんな感じなのかなぁと思いました。まさしく「ロール・オン」や「イージー・アズ・ザ・レイン」、「ナイト・ライフ」がその主たる曲ですね。
どんな気分の時に聞いたらいいかなぁ・・・、今時期でしたら日中の春霞によどんだ空を見ながら聞くのも一興かと・・・思います。
