同じく彗星衝突を題材にしてほぼ同時期に公開された「アルマゲドン」の陰に隠れて話題に上らなかった悲運の名作。アルマゲドンがブルース・ウィリスを起用して安易なヒーローものを描いたのに対し、本作は決定的な地球の危機を前にして様々な人々の愛と勇気が描かれるヒューマン・ドラマとして見るものの心を打つ。長年恨み続けた父親と死の直前に和解する主人公。家族と生き延びることよりも恋人を救うことを選ぶ少年。辛くも勇気ある決断を下す大統領。絶体絶命の危機にリーダーシップを発揮する老宇宙飛行士。限られた上映時間の中でそれぞれの個性と人格がしっかりと描き出される。繰り返し、見るたびに新たな発見と感動が得られる秀作である。

確か、この映画が出た近い時期に「アルマゲドン」もあったりして、
あら、同じような内容だなぁと感じたことがありましたが、
こっちは実際に隕石が地球に落ちてしまいます。
そのために巨大な津波が起きて、あらゆるものを飲み込んでいく、という光景が印象的でしたね。
隕石落下に際して、人は種の保存を図るために、
有能な人間を優先的に『ノアの箱舟』的なシェルターへ非難させます。
将来、実際に隕石が落下してくることが予測出来たなら、
こういう展開になってしまうかも知れませんねぇ・・・。

地球に隕石が衝突すると云うパニック映画の分類かも知れないが、本当は、極限下に於けるヒューマニズム(人間性)を、様々な立場や角度から捉えた名作である。

似たような
「パニック映画」と云う分類だけで、アルマゲドンなんかと
比較するのは根本的に
間違いだと思う。
