   一貫してヒューマニズムを追求し続けるイギリスの巨匠リチャード・アッテンボロー監督が、製作当時も続いていた南アフリカ共和国の人種隔離政策問題「アパルトヘイト」に、さまざまな迫害をものともせず真っ向から取り組んだ大力作。
   南アの新聞社編集長のドナルド・ウッズ（ケビン・クライン）は、黒人運動家スティーヴン・ピコ（デンゼル・ワシントン）と交流を持つようになり、反アパルトヘイトの意識に目覚めるが、やがてピコは投獄され、拷問の末に帰らぬ人となる。権力の矛先が自分にも向けられていると察したウッズは、家族を連れて南アからの脱出を図る…。
   とてつもない社会性を背景にした前半の友情劇と後半の脱出劇のバランスが素晴らしく、単なるメッセージ映画ではなく見事にドラマティックな映画として成立しているところに、巨匠の意気込みを感じる。エンド・クレジットでアパルトヘイトのために死亡した人々の名が連なっていくあたりも、人が人にもたらす差別という名の恐怖を痛感させる。（的田也寸志）

２人の友情を通して人種隔離政策の無惨さを描いているが、アッテンボローが監督しているわりにはエンターテイメント性が高い。逆に言うと、ヒューマン・ドラマっぽさが足りない。
と感じたのだが…映画の最後の字幕を見て嗚咽を抑えられなかった。アッテンボローにしてやられた。この字幕のために全てのドラマが仕組まれていたのだ。

　アパルトヘイトに立ち向かった黒人指導者と彼に共鳴した白人新聞記者。前半は問題に対峙する様子が中心、後半は新聞記者が問題を訴えるために家族と国外脱出する様子が中心。国外脱出した後どのように問題を訴えていったのか気になった私にとって、若干脱出劇がこりすぎで長い印象を受けてしまった。監督が「大脱走」で脱走を指揮する人物を演じていたことは有名だが。

　にしてもラストのテロップには非常に深い余韻を与えられた。かの有名なアパルトヘイト政策廃止までにどれだけの理不尽な犠牲があったのか。静かに心に訴えるものになっている。

　デンゼル･ワシントンは力強い眼差しがとても印象的で、こういった信念を持った役がとてもよく似合うと思った。
