本来はThe Three Soundsなどで活躍したハードバップ系のピアニストであるGene HarrisがBNLA時代に残したジャズ・ファンクというかフュージョンというかレア・グルーヴというかそういう色彩の異色作が24bitデジタルリマスター限定版アルバムとしてこのたびリリースされました。すでに国内盤はリリースされているのでお持ちの方も多いでしょうが音の良さは折紙付き、これを機会に買い直すのもよろしいかと存じます。Stevie Wonderの「As」の原曲に忠実なカバーが秀逸。ヴォーカル入りの曲が多いのでこれはブラックコンテンポラリーや70年代西海岸ソウルをお好みの方にも推薦できようかと思います。EW&Fのアル・マッケイ(g)、ヴァーダイン・ホワイト(b)が参加した曲もあったりしてメンバーは豪華。最高にグルーヴィなビートが全曲で聴くことができます。もちろん本人のファンキーでリリカルなピアノも健在。推薦。
ちなみに4曲目の「Stranger In Paradise」は解説によるとブロードウェイミュージカルの曲ってなっていますがこれBorodinの「だったん人の踊り」のメロディじゃあないのかなあ。それにしても綺麗なメロディです。

　僕はベーシストで、ロバート　ポップウェルフリークなので、彼が参加しているという理由だけでゲットしたのですが、いやいや、彼の参加は一曲だけでしたが、爽やかなフュージョンアルバムで、気に入りました。ベースもヴァーダイン　ホワイト、チャック　レイニー、アンソニー　ジャクソンと豪華で、ドラム　ハービー　メイソン、ギター　アル　マッコイというのもたまりません。ポップウェルもチョッパーではないが、彼のカラーが存分にでていました。あと、一曲目の「ＡＺ」が最高です。ジーン　ハリス自体は全然知らない人でしたが、このアルバムは大いに気に入りました。めっけものだと思いました。

クラブジャズと言ってしまうと乱暴ですが、そちらのコンテキストからは間違いなくリスペクトされるであろうG.ハリス(key)の'77年作品。
本作に至るまでの数作("アストラル・シグナル"や"ネクサス"等)と同様、気持ちよくなれる楽曲が並んでいます。
先ずはスティーヴィー・ワンダーの名曲をカバーした[1]。同じブルーノートに所属していた名トランペッター、ドナルド・バードのプレーが心地よい[3]。E,W&Fでも活躍したアル・マッケイ(g)作のメロウな[5]。また、D.バードファンの方には馴染み深い[6](そして[7])。なんとも妖しく、深く落ち込んでゆくような雰囲気にD.バードのtpが響きます。
他の参加メンバーには、ヴァーダイン・ホワイト(b)、アンソニー・ジャクソン(b)、チャック・レイニー(b)、ハーヴィー・メイソン(ds)といった豪華な(それ以上に、超グルーヴィーな)ボトム隊がいます。
前述の作品群から続くジェリー・ピータース(ライターズ等でお馴染み)による一連のプロデュースも本作が最後になります。無論、G.ハリスはこの後もプレーヤーとして活躍してゆきますが、もっともっと（ストレートな）ジャズピアノを聴かせるスタイルへと変化してゆきます。
＃個人的には、やはり本作辺りの感触が好きですが。(^^;
