L.モーガン(tp、flgh)、ブルーノートとくれば、私など恐縮して"すみません、よく知らないんです"となるのが常。"サイドワインダー"や"コーンブレッド"等の諸作の名前を知っているのは、単にそこに(程度は別にして)ロック的な響きが見られる作品である、と聞き知ったからに過ぎません。
では何故L.モーガンのラスト作品である本作('71年作)を入手したのかと言えば、そこにB.ハーパー(ts、as)、B.ハンフリー(fl)、R.ワークマン(b)と言った人の名前が見えたから、という事になります。
生粋のジャズファンの方、L.モーガン・ファンの方にはお叱りを受けるかも知れませんが、私がそれらメンバーから成る音楽に期待したのは、(所謂、スピリチュアル・ジャズと括られるような)精神性や音だった訳です。
殊、そのようなカテゴリを聴くようになった最中に出会ったB.ハーパーの諸作は、今なお私のフェイヴァリットであり続けています。そんなB.ハーパー(勿論、当時は新人だったでしょうが)を招きいれ、図らずもL.モーガン自身の最後の作品となってしまった本作が、奇しくもバッチリと響いてくる、そんな巡り合わせに一人悦に入っています。
無論、B.ハーパーのtsだけでなく、H.メイバーン(p、el-p)が紡ぎ出すフレーズ([2]でのソロが何とも心地いいです)にもやられてしまっています(^^;
もしL.モーガンが凶弾に倒れずに活動を続けていたとすれば、この様な音を更に追求して行ったのでしょうか。私にとっては、何とも不思議な出会いとなった作品です。
＃B.ハーパーのソロ1stのタイトルが、本作[1]でしたね。
