ジャズ・ロック/プログレッシヴ・ロック・バンド、ソフト・マシーンの1975年の未発表ライヴがCD化。アラン・ホールズワースやマイク・ラトリッジといったメンバーたちによるスリリングなインタープレイが楽しめる。


内容 (「CDジャーナル・レビュー」より)

ソフト・マシーンは66年に結成されたイギリスのジャズ・ロック・バンド。サイケふうなサウンドからスタートして、徐々にジャズ色を強めていった。このバンド、時代によってカラーもメンバーの顔ぶれ・人数も異なる。本作は75年1月ドイツにおける未発表コンサート・ライヴ。5人編成で、ドラマーはジョン・マーシャル。この時代はアラン・ホールズワースのギターが売り物だった。本作でもアランのソロをたっぷり聴けるのが嬉しい。アランは一部ヴァイオリン・ソロも披露するが、これは非常に珍しい。 (市川正二) --- 2006年04月号

未発表ライブ音源などが続々と発掘されているMachineですが、今度はドイツのラジオ・ブレーメンでのライブ音源が発掘されました。1975年1月29日に収録されたもので、1974年7月に録音された8枚目のアルバム「バンドルズ」のプロモーションツアーの一環として出演したもの。メンバーはMike Ratledge、Karl Jenkins、Roy Babbington、John Marshallに加えて、グループとしては初めてのギタリスト、Allan Holdsworthが参加しています。この「バンドルズ」時代のライブ音源としては、BBCでの発掘音源がオフィシャルなものとして先行発売されているので、まったくの「お初」ではありませんが、BBCはわずか3曲のみ収録と、いささか消化不良の感がありました。しかし、この70分以上にも及ぶラジオライブは、「バンドルズ」時代のグループの全容を余すことなく伝えてくれています。また、ギターファンにとってはアラン・ホールズワースが参加した貴重なライブ音源として、マストコレクションとしての価値が十分。

曲は「バンドルズ」からの選曲がほとんど。５曲目の「The Man Who Waved At Trains」では、スタジオ盤ではなかったバイオリンをホールズワースが披露しています。惜しむらくは番組の都合で「Hazard Profile Part 1」でのホールズワースのギターソロがフェイドアウトしてしまう点です。オリジナル音源そのものが原因だけに、仕方がないのですが、せっかく盛り上がっていく部分だけに残念です。

２曲目から３曲目にかけて、アランホールズワースは弾きまくってます。
永遠と枯れることなく続くアドリブは、とても気持ちいい。
ピッキングミスが一つもない流麗なソロは、とてもドラマチック。とにかく上手い。
一つ残念なのは、８曲目の「Hazard Profile.Part One」。
ギターソロが佳境に入ったところで、フェイドアウトしてしまう。
ラジオ放送の関係と言うが、一番美味しい所が・・・残念。
それにしても３０年以上も前の演奏なのに、アランのギターは陳腐化していない。恐るべし達人！

ＣＤで入手しにくい状況にあるBundles（収束）収録時のメンバーがドイツ　ラジオブレーメン（またしても）に残したライブ音源です。部屋でかけていたら、「えっ、これってライブなの？」と家族が驚いたほど演奏レベルは高く、アラン・ホールズワースもご期待に背くことなく弾きまくりです。録音状態もよく満足できました。
