彼らのひねくれた頑固なまでに曖昧な歌詞を分析するファンにとっては嬉しいことに、スティーリー・ダンはメロディを形づくり、キーボードとギターのエフェクトを重ね、洗練されたジャズとファンクとソウルをあしらうクラフツマンシップが達成できなれば、自分たちの支持者についてこいと命令することはない。『Morph the Cat』は、このグループの冷笑的な2本柱のひとりドナルド・フェイゲンによるソロ・アルバム。1993年の『Kamakiriad』以来となるまだ通算3枚目のソロだ。本作でフェイゲンはより社会的な観察力と私的な暴露をテーマとした。だが、やはりこのアルバムでも聞き手の心を強くとらえるのは曲の暗いきらめきと強引なグルーヴで、フェイゲンの真剣な意図が伝わってくる。壮大なほのめかしを込めたタイトルは、フェイゲンが表現するところによると「巨大でく幽霊のような猫らしきもの」にちなんでつけられた。これはマンハッタンの空を漂っているそうで、ウッディ・アレン『ニューヨーク・ストーリー』に登場する猫のようにおしゃべりな母親と似ていなくもないが、本作はポスト9.11の世界で感じられる不安と喪失感において、皮肉や斜に構えた部分を喪失してはいないことが反映されている。ここにはフェイゲン自身も含めた死、そして政治的抑圧のビジョンがある。空港の女性セキュリティ係とのコミカルでロマンチックな出会いもある。本質を捉えられたレイ・チャールズの幽霊との敬意に満ちた対峙もある。「さて、あんたは教会を引き入れたが、何の疑問も残さない/あんたが叫びたがるのはどんな種類の愛なのかを」。フェイゲンのぶっ飛んだ感覚が尊いものとじゃれ合う時でさえも、音楽はとても豊かで生き生きと輝き、それぞれの曲の力を否定することなどできはしない。--Lloyd Sachs

再結成からここ数年のスティーリーダンの活動ペースは意外にも活発で、ファンとしては嬉しい限りです。そして今度はベッカー氏の休暇中にフェイゲン氏がソロアルバムを作っていたとは！前ソロ作品から顕著になったリズム主体のサウンドはさらに洗練され、最近のスティーリーダン作品に見られたジャズ寄りのアプローチももちろん健在です。なによりボーカルと楽器が複雑に絡み合う気持ちいい一体感は、過去のどの作品より完成されていると思います。クラブ系ミュージシャンのリミックス盤なんか出たら面白いのになー。全ての大人の音楽ファンにオススメします。

「ナイトフライ」に魂を抜かれた口の私ですので、やはり他のアーティストとは違う特別な期待を込めてアルバムを聴くわけですが、第一印象は「あ〜いい感じ、ほっと一安心だわ。」というものでした。カマキリアド、トゥアゲインストネイチャーと自分的にはちと不満があったんですが、エブリシングマストゴーでかっこよさと気持ちよさが戻り、さらに本作では気持ちよさが増している感じがしました。「かつてのスティーリーダンやドナルドフェイゲンの曲のオリジナリティが感じ取れないと不安や不満を感じるんだな〜」と改めて考えました。その点『らしさ』が随所に感じられながらも新鮮な曲がならぶこのアルバムは「こんどのはどうなんだろうな〜？」「どうしようかな？」と考えてる方々にもほっと一安心の一枚ではないでしょうか。

早速買いました。期待を裏切ることなく、思いっきりスティーリーダンです。当たり前ですが。
２０年前にナイトフライに夢中になった、私のようなオヤジには、涙がちょちょぎれます。ナイトフライのような万人向けのところは、やや影を潜めましたが、それでも、噛めば噛むほど味わえるスルメのような素晴らしい出来上がりです。
