『常識はずれの天才ピアニスト　グレン・グールドのバッハ！僅か１年足らずで全音楽界を驚嘆せしめ、又「彼のゴールドベルク変奏曲は巨匠バッハ自身が演奏したに違いない。」と絶賛を博した彼グールドの演奏を、このレコードで味わっていただきたいと思います。』と熱のこもった宣伝を日本のレコード会社が新譜広告（1956年11月）の最上段を使っておこなってから50年を記念しての完全生産限定盤である。オリジナルLPを模した紙ジャケットや未発表テイク、グールド自身によるオリジナルライナーノーツなどを載せたブックレットもついている。モノラル録音という技術的ハンデもある本作が発売後一度も廃盤になることなく、半世紀にもわたって聴き手を魅了し続けるのはなぜだろう。
ピアノでバッハが演奏されることが当たり前の今日にあっては、当時なぜこの演奏がセンセーションを巻き起こしたのか理解しづらいが、ランドフスカに代表されるチェンバロによる長時間録音（全ての変奏で反復演奏をおこなう）が一般的で、「若い世代のピアニストにとってバッハをピアノで弾くのはタブーであり、時代遅れの愚劣な行為に近く見られる」（吉田秀和氏）という時代であったことを考えれば、ピアノでこのような演奏（反復を全て省略、総演奏時間37分）を無名の新人がデビューアルバムとして出した時点ですでに「伝説」は誕生していたともいえる。ブックレットにある批評はその当時の雰囲気を伝える重要な資料となる。
本作を聴けば、吉田氏が指摘した「演奏の速い走句たちの水際立った見事さ、よく歌う旋律、胸のすくような精緻なリズムと、フレーズの区切り方、テンポの良さ。そういった全体がまるで苔の庭のような一分の隙もない緻密で濃密な音の敷物を作り上げるのだが、しかもその表面の艶々した瑞々しさと、その下を絶えず生きて流れている叙情の味わいの気韻の高さ」を誰もが感じることができると思う。
