まるで黄金の７０年代にタイムスリップしたようでいて、しっかり新しい。豪華なゲストVoと意外な組み合わせのこれまた豪華な作詞陣。まるで丹念に時間をかけて編み込まれていった、色鮮やかな音の絨毯。いったいドラムは誰が叩いているのかとクレジットを見てみると、、、、なんということだ、これぞ冨田サウンド！

期待にたがわず、凄い出来のアルバム。
前作『shipbuilding』（2003）に比べ『Shiplaunching』の音の手ざわりは異なったものがあるが、最初のベースの音に腰砕けになり、それから50分弱、巧みな音作りにニンマリしっぱなしになる。
曲よし、歌よし、アレンジも歌詞もよし。演奏も含め、面子は今回も豪華だが、前作に同じくコラボ的アルバムにありがちな妙な硬さや逆にクダけた感じもない。
今作のコラボは、ヴォーカリストと作詞家を分離し、そこに芯として上の世代・下の世代を「中の世代」冨田恵一が繋ぐ手法がとられており、現在の邦楽シーンに受け継がれる音楽的連関を確認しているようにも思える。
音的には、前作よりもブラスやストリングスを用いた曲が多くなり、重量が増えた印象であるが、スッと音の空間を感じる瞬間もあり、そのためか聴き通しても疲れない。ファンク、ロック、R&B……音の味つけも多様ながら食傷しない絶妙のバランスを保っている。
先行シングルが3曲あったため、先行シングルのなかった前作に比べ正味は少なく見えるが、前作同様、「楽曲偏差値」（？）は非常に高い。エディットの違うシングル曲もあり、シングル曲が（前より）多いからといってアルバムとしての新鮮さは失われてはいない。
おすすめはTrk-4「アタタカイ雨 feat. 田中拡邦（MAMALAID RAG）」、Trk-7「恋は傘の中で愛に feat. 山本領平」、Trk-8「しあわせのBlue feat. YOSHIKA」、Trk-10「Prayer On The Air」。
どの曲も聴く度に多様な表情を見せてくれて、飽きることがない。
敷居は高そうにみえるが、音の根底にはポップスのクリエイターとしての「ポップ」が息づいているから、J-POPが好きな人にもおすすめできるし、ヒネリのきいた音は普段J-POPなんて、という人にもおすすめできる。

冨田さんのソロプロジェクト第二弾。
前回に引き続き、多彩なゲストボーカルを迎えた贅沢なアルバムとなっています。
しかしなんと言ってもこのアルバムのセールスポイントは楽曲の良さではないでしょうか。
冨田さんの書くバラードは前作の、耐え難くも甘い季節、道、もそうでしたが、良質な映画のエンディングテーマになりそうな哀愁のあるメロディなものばかりなのですが、今回のアタタカイ雨、ずっと読みかけの夏も素晴らしい出来になっています。
70年代のソウルや、スティーリーダンを彷彿させるアレンジも相まって、大人の鑑賞に堪えうる良質のポップ、ロックアルバムになっているのではないでしょうか。

シングルカットされた曲もいいのですが、上記したスティーリーダン調の2、ミディアムナンバーの８もお勧めです。
