クリムゾンファンの間ではこの「レッド」までを真のクリムゾンとする人も多いようだ。それはこのアルバムの完成度、そして「スターレス」による壮絶な幕引きによるものだ。また参加メンバーもジャケットの三人に加え、イアン・マクドナルド、デヴィッド・クロス、メル・コリンズ等まさにクリムゾンオールスターズとでも呼べそうなメンバーである。アルバムタイトル曲「レッド」は最初から最後まで高いテンションのまま突っ走る。このへヴィさは一度聴いたら鮮明に記憶されることだろう。まさに「堕天使」の悲鳴が聞こえてきそうになる「堕落天使」、これまたヘヴィな「再び赤い悪夢」、クロスのヴァイオリンソロに始まるインプロの頂点とも言うべき「プロヴィデンス」。そして宮殿クリムゾン的雰囲気から始まり、暗黒的中間部を超えるとヘヴィなレッドクリムゾンに戻り、最後はタイトル通りまるでブラックホールに飲み込まれて輝きを失ったかのようにどこまでも堕ちていく「スターレス」。この幕引きは何度聴いても感動的である。当時すでに飽和状態にあったプログレにおいて自ら幕引きするというフリップの姿勢が日本人にはうけたのであろう。それもあってプログレバンドの中でもわが国でのクリムゾン人気は非常に高いのだろう。

最新ベストで無惨にも短縮されてしまった#5を聴くたびに、改めて本アルバムの素晴らしさを痛感します。動と静が交互に現れる曲構成は「宮殿」と似ていますが、全体を通してがんがんギターが鳴り響き、怒りと悲しみのような感情、はちきれそうな緊張感が全曲から伝わってきます。ここでも私の持論「#5でディスクの最後を締めくくるべき！」特に「濃縮キングクリムゾン」を聴いて「スターレスってバラードなのか〜」と思った入門者にはぜひ。

フリップ、ウェットン、ブラフォード、マクドナルド…、とこのアルバムに主に関わった4人のメンバーが、ステージで演奏しているのを時々、想像してしまうのは私だけでしょうか！？
75年以降にクリムゾンが続くことが意欲的な気持ちだった頃のフリップは、「日本、南米で演奏したい」と公言した時期もあると言うし。やはり残念に思ってしまうのが、これも一部のファンの心理状態である。
そういえば、どこかの学園祭で学生さんのコピーバンドが苦心しながら、「レッド」を3人で演奏しているのを見るだけでもときめいてしまったことがあった。やはり70年代ライヴ録音の「レッド」やアルバムに収められている諸楽曲を聞きたかった渇望感もあるのだと日頃から感じる。
でもこの渇望感もこのアルバムをさらに自分の中で孤高の存在にしていると思う。
ジャケの表のメンバー写真、裏のぶっちぎったスピードメーターを見て、ジャケ買いしてしまう人もいただろう。
音楽、ジャケ、ともに５つ星！そして解散…。
参った！かっこいいぜ！
