　渋谷のル･シネマで2005年に上映されていた作品で、1927年、ワイマール共和国時代のベルリンで実際に起きた「シュテークリッツ校の悲劇」と呼ばれる事件をもとにした映画です。裁判によって明かされた事件の真相は当時の世相を大きく揺るがすものだったとか。しかし、この映画で描かれるのは、あくまでもその事件に至るまでの、当事者である5人の若者の心情の機微、関係性であり、事件後のことにはほとんど触れられず、事件当日にいたるまでの彼らの姿を描こうとする姿勢が伺えます。
　ドイツの名門ギムナジウムに通う主役二人・労働階級の出だが優秀なため入学を許されているパウル（ダニエル・ブリュール）と名家の子息ギュンター(アウグスト・ディール）。彼らと、ギュンターの美しく奔放な妹ヒルデガルド(アンナ・マリア・ミューエ )やその恋人ハンス、ヒルデの友人エリの数日間を追っています。

　思春期に特徴的な、気だるく退廃的な虚無感と、高層ビルの屋上の鉄柵にのぼって爪先立ち歩きしているような、破滅と背中合わせの危うい純粋さにあふれています。舞台となるドイツ郊外もバルビゾン派の絵画のようで、とても叙情的で素敵です。

　ただし、ストーリーを単純に記述すると過激で、ややもすると「若者はけしからん！」って言われて終わってしまいかねないところがつらいところ。この物語の本質はそこではないと思うのですけど。メインキャラの誰に感情移入しても切なくなります。

１９２０年代のギムナジウムに通う男子学生が，妹の恋人であり，自分の元恋人（同性）でもある見習いシェフ（男性）を殺害して自殺するという，「シュテークリッツ校の悲劇」という実話を映画化した内容です。
封切り前から，「一番美しい瞬間にこの世を去るべきだ。」というセンテンスが強調されて宣伝されていましたが，主人公の犯行の動機を語るキーワードとしては，遺書に用いられている「自分達の愛を裏切った者たちに復讐し，復讐したらほほえみながらこの世を去ろう。」という表現の方がむしろ正確でしょう。
若者の狂気や同性愛と異性愛が複雑に交錯する世界が描かれています。
ダニエル・ブリュールとアウグスト・ディールの競演もみどころです
ＤＶＤには主要な俳優や監督のインタビューも網羅されているので，興味深かったです。

全体としては、ちょっと説明不足気味な感じがする映画だった。期待したほどではなかったけど、青春の一瞬のきらめきや、はかなさを痛々しいくらいに感じた。ギュンター役の俳優がよかった。気分が沈んでるときにはあまりお勧めしない。
