これを初めて聴いた'80年前後、日本盤も無かったし、当時から通好みだったのか、かなり稀少盤だったことは間違いないです。真っ赤なジャケットが印象的なこの盤の入手には苦労しました。しかし、ジャズ喫茶には置いてある店があったので、良くリクエストしたものです。もっぱら聴いたのは、やはりＡ面。巷間、人気のある曲は、「Recado Bossa Nova」ですが、1曲目の「The Dip」も、何か歌謡曲っぽくて好きです。全体の出来としては、例えば、リー・モーガンの「THE SIDEWINDER」などと比べると落ちると思いますが、モブレイの笑顔の写真と真っ赤なジャケットには、魅力ありです。

時は1965年。もうハードバップがその全盛期を過ぎた頃。心は既にファンクジャズか？
ビリー・ヒギンズの叩き出す軽快なリズムに乗って、ホレス・シルバーにバックビートを効かせたようなハロルド・メイバーンのピアノが走り出す。「真っ赤に燃えた太陽だから、真夏の海は、恋の季節なの。」の空耳が懐かしい。フロントのモブレーのテナーが切ないメロディーを歌いだす。スモーキートーンのテナーが映える。あのモブレーが美空ひばりを研究していたとは！そこに絡む空間を切り裂くようにシャープなリー・モーガンのトランペット。これは、"Water Melon Man", "Sidewinder"に続く ブルーノート流の完璧なヒットチューンの作りだ。心地よいことオビタダシイ。この一曲目が、モブレー自作の"Dippin'"だ。
その乗りの良さを引き継いだのが、大ヒットチューン？の"Recado Bossa Nova"だ。どことなく漂うラテンの哀愁あふれる、場末感溢れるメロディに何故か郷愁を感じさせられる。ここでも醸しださせるのは、あのホレス・シルバー的ハードバップ。モブレーがジュニア・クックに、モーガンがあのブルー・ミッチェルのように聞こえてこなくもない。
残りの４曲も馬鹿にできない。50年代の香りがプンプンする中々のハードバップ。テナーのミドルウェイトチャンピオン、モブレーの余裕のある味わい深いトーンが楽しめる。鋭角的（モブレーと一緒だとどうしてもその感が強まる）なリーのトランペットも、相変わらずキレまくっている。スピード感のあるメイバーンのピアノもノリノリだ。ガッツ溢れる変拍子のヒギンスのドラムスもソウルフル。
だが、このアルバムの売りは、悪まで頭の二曲。新主流派達と比べれば、志はあまり高くないヒット狙いの二流曲。でもそれがどうした、「気持の良いことは常に絶対的に正しい」のだ。

深夜のFMでリカード・ボサ・ノヴァが流れていた。ノリノリのファンキーな演奏だった。ボサ・ノヴァの味も失われていない。ずっと前に、MaJQライヴで堪能した記憶がよみがえった。しかし、それはソロフのtpが鋭く輝く洗練された演奏だったが、どうもそれとは違う。ここではもう少しマイルドなモーガンのtp、重たくないモブレーのts、ヒギンズの小気味いいds。ピアノは目立たなかったが、素晴らしい演奏だった。この演奏が誰なのかこのときは分からなかった。翌朝調べると、何のこった手持ちのアルバムじゃないの。久しぶりに聴き直し、そのファンキーなノリを楽しんだ。クラシック漬けの日々だが、やはりJazzもいい。
