ネオアコから享楽的ポップネスへ。ポップなのに美しく、ポップなのに踊れる。
グレッグの声には独特の中毒性がある。地声はダミ声なのにファルセットは超純水の煌めきで、特に2.Valentineなど聴くとうっかりかのLa'sを思い出してしまって涙腺が潤みそう。80s調の万華鏡の如く華やかなPVも相まって、この曲はもう聴けば聴くほど癖になる。(PVの後半、"Is coming for me〜(パンパン！)"の手拍子がとってもチャーミング！)

ボーカルはLee Maversと繋がるけど、キラキラしたギターは「毒気が完全に抜けたThe Smith」なんて表現もアリかもしれない。そして80年代的手法のベースラインがこれまた良いのだ。
アルバム全体としても、コンポにアルバム入れて流しっぱなしにしたら気が付きゃうっかり何周も回ってました、なんてことがままありそうな粒ぞろいの楽曲群に思わず顔がほころんでしまう。

英Southamptonの4人組、The Delaysの2nd。"現在の空気と80ｓレトロスペクティヴ"、両者のせめぎ合いを通じて奏で上げられるのは、ここ最近のシーンにおいて極めて特異なグルーヴィサウンド。

空間を満たすゴージャス・シンセに、滑らかに舞うグレッグ・ギルバート(vo.)のファルセットが絡み合うオープニング"You And Me"からして「何ダカ変ダ。」チープ・ゴージャスなシンセのラインにディスコ・ライクなビートの多用、香りたつコーラスが湧出するダンサンブルなTr.2"Valentine"など、思わずマドンナかよ！と突っ込みたくなるような80ｓサウンド。

バブリーさが逆に安さを醸し出す80sディスコサウンドが、ヴェルヴェットな質感のグレッグの天上の声と溶け合い、滑らかにして艶やかなグルーヴを編み上げていく。この「せめぎ合い」が抜群のバランスで拮抗するTr.6"Winters Memories Of Summer"は、美しくうねる叙情が素晴らしい好ナンバーだが、逆にその拮抗が80s方面に崩れてしまうTr.7"Given Away"では妙な既視感に襲われることになる。

天賦の声が珠玉のメランコリーを謳う終曲"Waste Of Space"を聴くだに、正攻法でも十二分に勝負できるバンドでありながら、あえてこうした特異なアプローチで迫ってきたところが非常に面白い。同じくラフトレ所属のThe Veilsが好きな人もご一聴を。

ポップの概念が非常に曖昧であるから、ポップであることは難しい。時流に乗るならロックするに限る。しかし、delaysはポップであることを選んだ。1stシングルのvalentineを聴けば、彼等がそれにふさわしい素質を持つことがわかる。（ブロンスキー・ビートを連想してしまう）少し懐かしいシーケンサーと美しいファルセットボイス。そして、キラキラとした陽光とともに、青い海へ深く深く潜行していくイメージが広がる低音の気持ちよさ。この曲はアルバムの中でも傑出しているが、2ndシングルのhide awayや、7曲目のgiven timeなどもベタなポップでありながら、構成といい洗練されたアレンジといい、申し分ない出来。各曲のポップなメロディについては、楽々とクリアしてしまっている。「これ以上のポップアルバムは今年中には出ないだろう」と、彼等もこのアルバムには相当の自信があるようだが、それも当然のことだろう。言葉を尽くさなければ相違を示すことが出来ないようなバンドが多い中、彼等のポップなメロディとサウンドは信頼と賞賛に値する。ちなみに、valentineではニューオリンズを襲ったハリケーンを、you and meでは脱走兵のことを歌っている。ポップなメロディにビターな歌詞という点でもブリティッシュポップの伝統を踏襲しているが、個人的にはもう少し深みが欲しかった。
