1986年、渋谷桜丘ユーロスペースではじめて『チャオ・パンタン』を観た。一発で惚れた。Tchao Pantin････フランス語で「あばよ操り人形」という意味だ。

あらすじはザッとこんな感じ。
ガソリンスタンドの夜間給油係ランベールは、単調な仕事がつづく、何の変哲もない生活を送っている。孤独でアル中のこの中年男が、これまでどういう人生を歩んできたのか、誰も知らない。ある夜ベンスサンという身寄りのない青年と知り合う。ユダヤとアラブの混血であるベンスサンは、ランベールと同じように孤独で、麻薬の運び屋をやっている。二人は互いの孤独を慰め合い、時には衝突しながら、父子のような親しみを感じるようになる。だが、そんな二人の関係が、あるトラブルによって終わりを告げると、それまで素性の知れなかったランベールの秘密が明らかになっていく。

『チャオ・パンタン』はパリの陰影を写し取った80年代のフィルム・ノワールだ。夜のパリの限りなくモノトーンに近い空気を背景にしながら、クロード・ベリ監督は巧みな映像展開で、中年男の孤独感や若者の屈折した日々を見事に描いている。ランベールの復讐劇に映画が姿を変える後半、怒りを包み込み感情を押し殺した表情の中に燃えるような人間味を隠し持つ････そんなランベールを演じたコリュシュが素晴らしい。肥満した肉体とどんより淀んだ大きな目。その疲れた目からは悲しい光が放たれる。ベンスサンが熱をあげるパンクガール・ローラが、父親ほど歳の離れたランベールに惹かれていくさまは、愛しくて、抱きしめたくなる。怒りと悲しみを内に秘めた寡黙なランベールは、それほどストイックな魅力にあふれているのだ。

ランベールとローラのロマンスは明らかに『レオン』のオリジンであり、穏やかな解放感が再び訪れる悲劇を予感させながら、フィルム・ノワールとして最も望ましい結末を迎えるこの映画は、20年が過ぎても、わが洋画ランキングのトップなのだ。
