デビューアルバムの『インサイド・イン/インサイド・アウト』を聴くと、ブライトン出身のバンド、「ザ・クークス」の偉大な将来性を感じる。それはこのバンドは、2つの重大なことがわかっているからだ。それは、豊富なアイディアと、自分達の音楽がどの系統に入るのかを自覚していることだ。だからこそこのアルバムが、ザ・キングズ・レイ・デイビスのスタジオで録音したのが適切だったのだろう。クークスの歌手、ルーク・プリチャードは、デイビスと同じく、キャッチーなギターポップのかたまりだけを取り除くこつを知っているようだ。短くなめらかな一曲目の「シーサイド」のイントロの後、毎曲毎曲一つ前の曲よりもよくなっていき、聴き手の耳を虜にしていく。「ソファー・ソング」は楽器をかき鳴らして、一緒に歌えるようなリズムだが、「エディーズ・ガン」は荒っぽく、じゃんじゃん騒ぐロック調で、「オー・ラ」はまろやかでメロディーが美しく調和していて、その後の正真正銘ファンキーな「マッチボックス」や「ナイーヴ」でうんと盛り上がる。そういった調子で、プリチャードのしゃっくりのような歌い方と、ヒュー・ハリスの最高に巧みなギターに引っ張られ、14曲続いていく。ザ・クークスはこのアルバムのリリース以前から誇大な宣伝をしていたが、それ以上の実力を十分に発揮した。

このアルバムは"INSIDE IN / INSIDE OUT"の2枚組アナログ盤にのみ
収録されていたライヴ音源に、2006年2月の来日時に大阪で披露
されたアコースティック・セット4曲を収録した日本編集盤だそうです。

英語歌詞カード・日本語訳がちゃんとついてます。
CCCDではないです。

やっぱりファンなら買うべき!値段も安い!
ボーカルのLukeの声が良いです。アコースティックだとその良さが
さらによく分かると思います!
また来日してくれないかなぁ…もちろんMaxも。
このジャケットも好き!!!

良いアルバムである。それが彼らのデビュー・アルバムを評するのに
最も、端的なのだ。英国南東部、Brighton出身の４人組Kooksの
Inside In Inside Outは若さという勢いを軸にしながらも、
要所で渋みもたたえた、味わい深く幅広い楽曲と、表現力のある
ボーカルが、完成度の高い作品に聴き手を惹き込む魅力を担っている。

一曲目の“Seaside”はアコースティック・ギター1本のシンプルな
ナンバーだが、ここでまずボーカルの歌の上手さに気づく。
やや掠れ気味の、男臭さたっぷりの声である。そんな声が、
前述の一曲や、徐々にアルバムの世界を盛り上げてゆく“Sofa Song”、
“Eddie's Gun”、“You Don't Love Me”という扇情的な曲の中においても
気持ち良く響き、聴かせる。こてこてのロック・サウンド一辺倒の
構成に終わらず、そこはかとなくR＆Bの雰囲気を匂わす“Matchbox”や、
スタイリッシュなギター・リフが色っぽい“Naive”など各曲ごとに
異なるカラーがあり、飽きずに聴かせるバラエティの豊かさがただ頼もしい。

他のあまたといるIndie bandsと一線を画する彼らの最大の魅力は、
曲そのものにしっかり根を下ろした良質なメロディと、青い情熱
の中にみなぎる、自信に満ちた演奏力にあるといえよう。
メンバー全員２０歳そこそこということで、プレス写真から見る限り
至って無邪気そうな青年達ではあるが、ひとたび楽器を手にすれば、
全く別の顔を見せるとは、まさにミュージシャン冥利に尽きる話である。

このところ、次から次へと生きのいいロックンロールバンドが登場するUK音楽シーン。そんな中から登場したこのKOOKSというグループだが、これがなかなかイイ。確かに、全体的な印象としては、まだ荒削りな部分が多く、詰めの甘いところも感じられるが、なんと言っても一曲一曲がキャラ立っていて、凄く耳に馴染むポップ感がある。アコギを多用しているのも、他のバンドとの違いを際立たせるのに奏効していると思う。比較するのもなんだが、今話題独占中のARCTIC　MONKIES（殆ど同世代）なんかよりも、曲作りのセンスでは優れていると思う。やや地味な部分はあるが、将来大ブレイクするだけのポテンシャルは秘めているように、僕には感じられました。
