最近のシンプリーレッドはオリジナルよりベスト版が多い気がして、ちょっと距離を置いていたけど、こういう切り口なら歓迎できます。
サウンド的にはボサノバ的だったり、ストリングスを加えたスタンダード風だったり、とにかく“渋い”のである。
選曲自体も渋く、オリジナルでは感じなかった良さを再認識できたりして、それもちょっとうれしかったりします。
特にSad Old Redのジャズっぽい仕上がりは絶品で、”もっと聴きたい”欲望に駆られたりします。
風化せず、良い年のとり方をするバンドです。

のっけの"Perfect love"を聴きながらライナーを読めばわかるのは、本作の鍵の一つはラテンフレーバーの導入だということだ。基本がセルフカバーだから、やはりMick Hucknailも「ネタ切れ」か、なんて思ってしまいがちだし、ジャケットも相変わらず気取った感じだしなんだかなあ、と思いながら本作を買ったのだけど、いやー、なんつーか、「ちょっとの工夫でこのうまさ」っつう感じで、いいです。彼は、ビシッと歌ったときのほうが映える。カッコいい。曲によってはジャジーだし、オーケストラをしたがえたものもある。名曲"Holding back the years"もしっとりといえばそうなんだけど、本作のこの曲で響いているのは、スパニッシュなギターだ。シブさよりも、アツさを聴くべきではないかと思う。Simply Redといえば、よくレゲエを取り入れた曲をつくっていたが、アフロキューバンな香りをただよわせた曲はあまりなかったのではないかと。この人の歌には、どんなに静かな曲でも、抑えられない「熱」が感じられて、それを燃えさせてくれる音楽があったということではないか。ラテンは彼に合う。

後半になるとジャジーな雰囲気になっていて、それはそれでSimply Redらしい部分ではあるのだが、個人的には、前半の方が印象的だった。期待していなかったぶん、全体的には良かった。

5.0 out of 5 stars ライブと音楽経験の年月で熟成されたウイスキーのようなサウンドの凄み, 2008/1/18
購入が遅れましたが、聴いてびっくりでした。ほとんどの曲が再録ですが、ソウル要素の他にボサノバ、ジャズなど、ミックの歌声にぴったりなサウンドに仕上がっています。80年代にブルーアイドソウルバンドとしてデビューして依頼、年齢を重ね、多くのライブをこなして、出来上がってきたサウンドのように感じます。スタジオの録音だけでは完成できない、すばらしい出来です。バンド経験者ならこのサウンドのすばらしさがわかると思います。
もう少し、日本でも人気と話題があっても良いバンドなのにな〜。本当に良いです。
