テレビジョンのデビュー盤。N.Y.パンクの括りで語られがちな彼らですが、この作品を聞けば、単なるパンクで片付けられるべきではない高い音楽性の持ち主だったことがよくわかります。イギリス的な陰影とアメリカ的なデッドな音作りが不思議にうまくミックスされていて、心地よく聞き通すことができます。ユニークなギターのリフと2本の絡みも良いバランス。派手さはないが長く付き合える1枚。

７７年リリースの１ｓｔ。２ｎｄアルバムの「アドベンチャー」もいいが、テレビジョンといえば、やはりこのアルバムであろう。ニューヨークパンクの…という言葉で語られることが多い彼らだが、その音楽はそういった枕詞も必要のない時代を超えたものである。

このバンドの魅力はトム・ヴァーレインとリチャード・ロイドの二人のギターの絡み合いを中心とするシンプルなバンドサウンドと、ヴァーレインの書くシュールな詩（詩人的な詩ともいえる）にあるが、二人のギタリストが繰り返し奏でる印象的なリフは、ジャケット写真と同じザラザラした手触りとともに、都会的な冷ややかさと張り詰めた夜の空気を感じさせる、非常に個性的で他に類のないものである。

リマスター化に際しボーナストラックが５曲収録されたのは嬉しいが、それがオリジナルアルバムの完成度を損ねてしまっているのが残念である。値段が高くなってもいいからボーナストラックを別にして２枚組みにして欲しかった。そういった贅沢な不満がでる程、アルバムとしての完成度が高い作品である。

７７年発表、テレヴィジョンのデビュー・アルバムにしてロック史に残る名盤『マーキー・ムーン』。
ニューヨーク・パンクの代表作に挙げられることの多い本作ですが、他の方も言っておられるように、サウンド的にはパンクの一言では片付けられない作品です。確かに、テクニックに頼らないギターとドラムをメインに置いたシンプルな構成はパンク的とも言えますが、ギター兼ボーカル、トム・ヴァーレインの独特の歌声とツイン・ギターの分厚いサウンドはラモーンズを筆頭とした他のパンク・バンドとはかなり異なります。

絡み合うツイン・リードが絶妙な、疾走感溢れる「シー・ノー・イーヴル」。アルペジオを交えたギターが美しいミドル・テンポの「ヴィーナス」。
１０分以上にも及ぶ大曲の表題曲「マーキー・ムーン」。幻想的なムード漂う、個人的には一番好きな「エレヴェイジョン」。
少しトーン・ダウンしてじっくり聴かせる「ガイディング・ライト」。最後を飾るのは、暗く怪しい雰囲気が曲全体に漂う「引き裂かれたカーテン」。

トム・ヴァーレインはドアーズに憧れてエレクトラと契約したと公言していますが、そのドアーズの影響を感じさせる詩的な歌詞にも注目です。言われてみれば歌い方なんかもジム・モリソンに似ている気がします。本作は時期的に言うとまさにパンク・ムーヴメント真っ盛りの時に発表されましたが、内容的にはむしろ、そのちょっと後のポスト・パンク、いわゆるニュー・ウェイブに近い印象を受けます。

テレヴィジョンはこの後もう１枚アルバムを発表して解散してしまいますが、このたった２枚のアルバムが後のバンドに多大な影響を与えたことは間違いありません。ジャンルなど関係なしに、ただ単純にカッコイイ。そんなアルバムです。
