私のギターの師匠は、リアルタイムでこれを聴いた時、
「ギターだけでここまでできるんだ！」と衝撃だったそうです。

この当時もギターインストは数多くあったでしょうけど、
ロックっぽくない、悲恋やダイアモンドダストのようなメロウな曲も
ポピュラリティのあるギター奏者が、情感こめて演奏することに成功させている、
そういう意味で、歴史的に意義深いアルバムだと思います。
（今みたく、誰もが玄人好みのアルバムを入手できる時代でもなかっただろうし）

今はギターインストのいい作品が多いから、
現代の耳で聴いて、これを面白く感じれるのは、
同類のギタープレーヤーか、ベックのファンがほとんどかもしれないけど、
そして自分も、リアルタイムじゃないけど、
このアルバムに出会ってから２０年以上たっているので、冷静な判断はできないクチですが。

演奏の質は高いし、ベックのプレイも飾り気がなく、かつ、
現代版のベックとは別の次元の鋭さがあるような気がして、
取り上げている楽曲そのものが良いし、・・・やっぱり手放せない１枚だと思います。

ちなみに師匠の意見では、
もちろんこのアルバムは、楽曲がいいんだけど、
純粋にベックのプレイだけを聴くと、ベストプレイは「シーズ・ア・ウーマン」だそうです。
私としてはこのレゲエのリズムがイマイチなんですが、実際ソロをコピーしてみると、
おいしいフレーズがちゃっかり潜んでいる、まさにギター奏者向けのテイクですね〜

ジェフ・ベックが31歳時に製作されたこのアルバムはゴールドディスクを獲得し、
商業的にも大成功を収めた名アルバムといえます。
内容はフュージョンそのものですが、ジェフの天地を駆け巡る様なギターのバックで
マックス・ミドルトン、フィル・チェン、リチャード・ベイリーの3人が
テクニカル・センス抜群の味付けをこなし、当時としては前衛的な世界を形成しています。
ジョージ・マーティンの手腕により、隙のない音作りは聴く者に感動を与えてくれます。
さりげなく、曲間がメドレー風に途切れていないのも巧い手法だと思います。
ラストの隠れた名曲“Diamond Dust”は、当時某FMの名番組“クロス・オーバー・イレブン”
でも何度となく取り上げられていたのも、今では懐かしい記憶となりました。
ジェフ・ベックの全ての作品に言えることですが、彼のかっこよさに関しては、
「わかる人だけわかればいい」とも思います。これだけの名アルバムであるにも関わらず、
私の周囲にはその価値をわかってくれる人があまりにも少ないというのが現実です…。

一介のギタリストとして遅ればせながら聴いてみた。

ギターのテクニック面の収穫を期待していたのだが、聴き終わってみるとドラムが強く印象に残った。
リチャード・ベイリーの叩くドラムはテクニカルであると同時に、最高にグループ感に溢れている。

これにジェフ・ベックの極上のトーンが絡むことで、独特の空気感が見事に構築されている。
素晴らしい。。。

超有名なジャケット共に一家に一枚、どうぞ！
