デビュー・アルバムの記録的な売り上げという、夢のように順調な滑り出しを
果たしたFranz Ferdinand。周囲の注目が一気に彼らに集まる中で、約１年半と
いう比較的短いインターバルを経てリリースされた２ndアルバムは、小手先
ではない、正真正銘の彼らの実力を認めさせるに十二分の、本領が発揮された
文句無しの一級品.。今作には彼らのインタビュ--が見られるDVDや、
ボーナス・トラックも含めたお得な＋アルファがついている。

序盤の“The Fallen”の象徴的なイントロ、“Do You Want To”に孕む
確信的なキャッチーさ、“Walk Away”ではもの憂げなメロディに
影を添えるベースが底辺でうごめくように鳴り、荒いリズムと欲情的な
ギター・リフに投げやりな歌が雑に絡む“Evil And A Heathen”。
Elliott Smithのデモ・テープを聴いている様な錯覚に陥る、
アコースティック・ギターとピアノに彩られた、
“Eleanor Put Your Boots On”。 ディスコ・サウンドを意識した
ファンキーな“Well That Was Easy”はまさに彼らの真骨頂であろう。

全13曲、スローなナンバーも交えつつ、体を動かさずにはいられない
ダンサブルなリズムと、扇情的、挑発的、意図的な狙いが見え見えな
メロディラインに、忙しげに掻き鳴らされるギター。しれっと太い音を
出し、人知れず曲の核を担うベース。art-rockなどと言う不可解な
形容は、見れば、聴けばわかる彼らの個性の前では全く意味をなさない。
あからさまな目立ちたがり屋が好きか嫌いか、早い話、あとは受け手の
嗜好次第である。

最初に成功すればするほど、次にかかるプレッシャーは相当であろう。
それを鑑みれば、彼らの世界は普遍性を持って、今後のロック・シーン
に不動に君臨する新たな席を、このYou Could Have It So Much Better
と引き換えに手にしたようだ。
