Lights and Soundsは、イエローカードが成長したという意思表示である。始まりから「ただのガキ達」ではなかったが、このフロリダ経由カリフォルニア行き的クインテットは、2003年のOcean Avenueよりもずっとタフなテーマに挑んでいる。彼らのミュージシャンとしてのレベルはいうまでもなく非常に高いが、更に野心的なアプローチを重ねているのだ。ショーン・マッキンのヴァイオリンは相変わらず驚く程上手に曲に取り込まれている。今回もまたかくべからざる存在となっているが、今回、彼らは更に果敢なる挑戦を果たした。彼らの3枚目のアルバムは、こぎれいなピアノをベースにしたインストゥルメンタルで始まるのではない(Three Flights Up)、25人のオーケストラで始まるのだ。また、ザ・ディクシー・チックスのナタリー・メインズもHow I Goで共演。一瞬これみよがしな演出にも感じられるだろうが、彼らは、珍しいコンビネーション(ポップ・パンクとクラシックの結合)に挑んでいるのだ。メジャーなレーベルでの第二作目ということで、彼らは真剣に自分達の音にとりくんでいる。これは今回が初めてのことではないし、彼らはこれみよがしだったり、愚かであることはない。ハートが一番大切だが、カリスマティックなフロント・マン ライアン・キーは、他に思うことがあるらしい。Two Weeks from Twentyではザ・ブラック・アイド・ピーズのプリンツ・ボードを起用、「また一人ガンを持たせて送り出したが死んでしまった/彼がいなくて寂しくなるだろう、20歳をすぎてまだ2週間だった」と歌う。また、Words, Hands, Heartsでは「全世界はもう変わってしまった、男達は死んでしまった」と嘆く。もう瞳を輝かせたティーンエイジャー達ではない。イエローカードは希望を捨てたわけでもなく、思いやりは限りなく深い。しかし時代は変わり、彼らもまた変わったのだ。

Lights and Sounds is a bigger, broader album from their platinum debut album Ocean Avenue, that finds Yellowcard moving away from songs about breakups and onto more expansive themes of artifice, war, and adulthood. The guitars are tougher, the songs more intricate and encompass a wider spectrum of musical styles, which is evident in the title track.
