高級外車ディーラーをしているチャーリーの元に届いたのは、かつて自分を勘当した父の訃報。葬儀の席で父の遺言状を開けた彼は、自分に遺されたのが１台の車と薔薇の木だけだと知る。父の遺産300万ドルを相続するのは、会ったこともない自閉症の兄レイモンドだと判明する。遺産を何としても手にしたいチャーリーは、レイモンドを施設から連れ出し、ロスに戻る。・・・
何といってもすごいのが、自閉症の兄を演じたダスティン・ホフマン！初めて見た当時、自閉症というのが何たるものかわからなかった私も、「本当にこんな風なのかも」と納得させられるほどのリアリティが伝わってきました。実は類稀なる計算力と記憶力を持っているという設定も面白く、レイモンドがその能力を発揮する場面ではトム・クルーズと扮するチャーリーと一緒に唖然としてしまいました。トム・クルーズは最初は鼻持ちならないボンボンといういかにもぴったりの役だったのが、だんだんレイモンドに接していくうちに彼と自分の真実を知って和らいでいく様子に、私もほのぼのした気分になりました。
淡々とした雰囲気の中で進んでいく物語が最後に迎える結末が何とも切なく、何度見ても涙が出てしまいます。控えめだけど、後味は爽やかで優しい気持ちにさせてくれて、「また観よう」と思わせてくれる作品です。
