『魔笛』と並行して最晩年に書かれた作品であり、随所に晩年のモーツァルトならではの豊かな響きを感じ取ることができる作品でありながら、他の傑作オペラの数々に比べると上演の機会も、またCDやDVDの数もはるかに乏しい状態になってしまっているこの不幸な作品。このレビューを書いている現在では、国内盤DVDはひとつもなく、日本で手に入りやすい直輸入盤として三種類ほどが存在するだけの状態です（以前VHSで出ていたレヴァイン＝ウィーンフィル盤は近々国内盤でも出そうな予感がしていますが…）。確かに、音楽的にはモーツァルトのウィーン時代の他のオペラと比べると、やや型にはまった単調な部分が多くて物足りないと感じさせる点が多いのは事実です。しかし、この作品の基底に流れる価値観・人生観のようなものに目を向けると、作曲の動機や形式の相違を超えて、『魔笛』や『フィガロ』に見られるのと同じいかにもモーツァルト的なヒューマニズムが色濃く流れていることは間違いありません。すなわち、「愛と友情こそが世の中を平和にする」とでもいう価値観です。このディスクでは、パリオペラ座管弦楽団による優れた演奏と、細かい演技や象徴的小道具を重視した演出によって、そのようなモーツァルトの心の叫びとでも言うべきものを非常に強く感じることができます。是非このディスクあたりをきっかけに、この不遇な佳作にも多くの人が親しむようになっていただきたいと願って止みません。
