   ジョエル＆イーサン・コーエンの兄弟が、初めて共同監督としてクレジットされたクライム・コメディー。自称「教授」が率いる犯罪集団が、信心深い女主人がひとりで暮らす下宿屋を借り、地下室から係留されたカジノ船の金庫までトンネルを掘り進む。計画は成功するも、すべてが女主人にばれてしまい、教授らは彼女を始末しようとするが…。元ネタは1955年の傑作『マダムと泥棒』。舞台はロンドンからアメリカ南部に移された。
   コーエン兄弟のオフビートなコメディー感覚が生かされるのは、とても腕利きの犯罪者には見えない5人組のキャラクター設定だ。5人が勘違いの行動でとぼけた笑いを誘うが、やはり場をさらうのは、インテリ教授を大げさな表情とセリフ回しで演じるトム・ハンクス。マイペースを貫く女主人役イルマ・P・ホールも、ハンクスに劣らぬ存在感を発揮する。物語は後半、ブラックな展開もみせるものの、全体としては、かつてのコーエン作品にあった強烈な毒気は感じられない。犯罪モノとしてはドラマの流れが停滞気味だが、小粋なコメディとして観れば楽しめるはず。（斉藤博昭）

　１３５０円の「ショーシャンクの空に」を予約した時に、配送料を無料にしたかったのでセット買いしました。
おまけで買ったとはいえ、他の方が酷評するほど悪い映画ではありませんでした。トム・ハンクスを中心に金庫破りの完全犯罪を目論む５人組がその途上で１人の老婆に翻弄されて失敗していく様を描いたコメディです。
最初からコメディだと思えば笑いどころは結構あります。
そして、悪い事をすると天罰が下るというのを実に分かりやすく表現してくれています。まあ、星４は多いかな？とおもいつつも、この値段なら買って損したと思うほどひどい映画じゃなかったので、４つにしておきました。

すきですねえ。
雰囲気が変。趣味も変。

舞台設定が、まずは、奇妙。
ミシシッピ川の南部。未亡人の信心深い女性の下宿。
そこを根城にしての現金強奪・・って、書いてしまうと、
この映画の内容を損なう？？

いえいえ。あらすじなんかは、実はどーでもいい。
見どころは、ゴスペルを初めとする黒人文化風俗習慣と、
奇妙で独特な世界観。

教授キャラは、思わず拍手したくなるほど、トム・ハンクスが
達者で、彼の芸達者、ここに極まれりです。

何を捨てても飲み込んで、許して浄化してくれる、
ミシシッピという大いなる母。それと未亡人という、おおいなる
母。

暗示と異様で奇妙で、ブラックユーモアな乾いた世界を堪能あれ。

入れ歯を入れ、更に話し方、笑い方で「いかにもイカサマ氏」とわかる雰囲気をむんむんとたちこめながら、トム・ハンクスが登場。

共通点の全く無い５人の男たちの大奮闘が、まずは見所。
その後の５人の運命が、面白おかしく、一人一人順番に決まっていくさまが、もう一つの見所。
そして何よりも、大物のトムと真っ向から対決してたイルマ・P・ホールの演技が実に大きな見所だった。

善人と言い切れない善人、悪人を言い切れない悪人の登場と言う意味で、「コーエン兄弟による異色サスペンス」という言われ方をする「バートン・フィンク」。あれに似た面白さを感じた。どちらも予想外のラストが来る。

この「コーエン色」を私は大いに好む。
