ポリスが再結成されるとのニュースが流れているが、手ごろな値段でポリスの歴史を辿るのに好適なベスト盤としてお薦めできるのが本作。ヒット曲・代表曲はほぼ網羅しているので、初期のレゲェ＋パンクのイメージでデビューしてから、見つめていたいの大ヒットで世界を席捲するまでの、７０年代末から８０年代半ばに活動を停止するまでの短期間に僅か３人のバンドで成し遂げた偉業を把握することができる。もちろん、ＣＤ１枚なので収められている曲数に限りはあり、あの曲も入っていたら等と言い出したらきりがないが、入門編として、あるいは昔ポリスの音楽になじんでいて今クイックにポリスの軌跡を再確認したい人には本作は十分であろう。そして本作の価値を高めているのが、細かい字がびっしり並ぶ、メンバー各人の生い立ち、バンド結成に至るいきさつ、その音楽の変遷、大成功を収めた後バンドが活動停止に至るまでの諸事実・証言を丹念に拾い上げたコンプリート・ヒストリーなる資料の存在。これ１枚あればたちどころにポリスの歴史に詳しくなれること間違いなしである。

ポリスも意外と８０’ｓコンピ集には入れてもらえないアーティストです。
今現在、ボクは見たことありません。
あの世紀の名曲”見つめていたい”を８０’ｓコンピに入れないなんて！！
著作権問題でもあるのでしょうか？
ポリスの名曲”見つめていたい”は、８０’ｓを語る上で落としてはならないはずです。
次回のコンピ集ではよろしくお願いします！！
ところでこのベスト盤、最初から最後まで雰囲気バツグンで、リラックスできますヨ！！
自信を持っておすすめします。

ポリスが30年振りに再結成されるそうで嬉しい。パンク・ロック等、意味の無い騒がしいだけのサウンドが流行っていた当時、明確なメッセージと高い音楽性とで我々に新鮮な驚きを与えてくれたポリス。また、新たな境地を見せて欲しい。本作は題名通り、彼らの代表作が詰まっている。

男娼への慈愛と言う斬新な歌詞を、悲哀に満ちたサウンドで包んだデビュー作「Roxanne」。現代社会における人間の孤独を歌って、悲愴感をヒシヒシと感じさせる「Message In A Bottle」。シンセサイザーを使わず、ドラムス、ギター、ベースだけの演奏で独特の浮遊感を感じさせるという技巧が光る「Walking In The Moon」。愛の素晴らしさを歌って、聴く者を幸せな気分で満たす「Every Breath You Take」。どれも素晴らしい。

この他にもヒット曲の目白押しで、ポリスの曲の俯瞰ができる。メッセージ性の強い詩を、高度な演奏力で包んで、聴く者の胸を打つ傑作アルバム。
