クラシック音楽フアンの間には、それなりにいろいろと楽しい論争があるけれど、中の命題の一つに「世界最高のオーケストラはシカゴ交響楽団である」論があると思う。もちろんそれはフアンの間の遊び心で発展した論争であるが、しかしこの命題は、いくつかの録音を聴くと「なるほど」と思わせるものである。特にこのショルテイが晩年に録音した2曲のストラヴィンスキーを聴くと、むしろそれに反論するのが難しいくらい。オーケストラの機能は完全を極めているし、各個の楽器奏者の技術が極めて高度で安定している。しかも楽器間のバランスが絶妙で、様々な合奏音を明瞭な角度で照らし出し、完璧な表現型として具象化させてしまう。その鮮やかさは練達の職人の至芸の様だ。

しかもそうして聴き手に提出される「音楽」は、決して無機的ではなく、音楽としての論理が構築されていて、説得力があり、聴き手の心を強くゆさぶるのである。

そして、このオーケストラにしてこの指揮者ありといえるショルティの存在がまた圧倒的だ。この素晴らしい楽団の「長所」をここまで見事に引き出せる指揮者と言うのはもう今後出現しないのではないだろうか。ショルティとシカゴ交響楽団が、長年の蜜月の時代を経て作り上げた究極形態がここに記録されている。

それと、そのことごとくを見事に収めたデッカの録音技術も素晴らしい。ストラヴィンスキーの録音映えする音楽が、活き活きと鮮やかに繰り広げられる。その爽快感は比類ない。
