1曲目「It's only love」のイントロからドラマは突然始まる。
切ないトランペット、抱かれているようなギター、ミック独特の時にハスキー、時に甘いボーカルによって、濡れた甘い吐息すら聞こえてきそうなほどのメロウな世界観が現れる。
そして2曲目「A New Flame」では恋に落ちる幸福を、7曲目の「Love lays its tune」では、"初体験"を迎えるおそらく若い二人の悲壮なほどの純粋さを、語るまでもなくあまりにも有名な9曲目では愛し合っていた二人のすれ違う心を、まるでミックによって語られる一本の恋愛映画のように生き生きとリアルに描き出している。
ラストの「enough」は、イントロから嵐で荒れる灰色の空と海を思わせ、胸騒ぎすら覚えるほど。

それまでのアルバムが、労働者階級の代弁者としての政治的なメッセージ色の強いものだったのと一変して、この一枚は徹頭徹尾ラブソングである。(と言っても、実は、8.は政治的なメッセージの隠喩なのだそうだけど)
このアルバムの楽曲を作っていた時期に、ミック自身が純粋で真摯な恋愛をしていたのではないかと思わせる。
恋愛のある瞬間をドラマの一場面のように鮮やかに切り出し、美しいメロディラインに乗せ、最高のアレンジで再構築し、そして言うまでもなく、ミックの誰にも似ていない声がそのドラマを完成させる。
正直に言って、この後のアルバムは、彼らがブルジョワジー側になってしまったことによって、その輝きを失っていくのを感じるのを禁じ得ない。
その最後の至高の輝きを放つ一枚である。
是非、暗闇の中、ヘッドフォンで赤いベルベットの奥行きのある世界に漂ってみて欲しい。

この作品も発売当初、学生の頃からの長らくの愛聴盤。バンドにはブラックマンも入っているのですが、この作品はリズム隊がホワイトマン。ながら、ちゃんとブラックを意識したノリで綺麗な音で迫ってきます。当時の録音としてもかなりの技術を投入しているはず。今でもしっかり、デジタル盤として聴けます。
淡々とグルーヴを出そうと流れる1曲目、元気溌剌、綺麗にファンクする2曲目、4曲目と続き、従来のこのバンドのリリカルな部分を重く聴かせてくれる5曲目、最後を飾るのに相応しいマジェスティックな10曲目と聴き所満載！一気に聴けます。
特に私自身がギターから本格的にファンクっぽいベースに憧れ、これはライト感覚でいいなあと思って最初に一所懸命にベースをコピーした作品です。
ポップで聴きやすいオシャレなホワイトファンク、どっぷりハマりすぎてないのが気持ちいいです。なので、ドロドロ、ゴリゴリがお好きな方はオススメしません。軽いタッチで楽しみたい方、大歓迎！といったところです。
特筆すべきは、ブラジル人ギタリストのT.P.ヘイトール氏の参加！イヴァン・リンスなんかでも弾いてましたが、彼のギターが華麗なサウンドを綺麗でブラック/ジャズ的なアプローチで支えていてホワイトノリを出してくれています(この後ソロを出しましたがちょっとこのバンドとは違う方向性でしたが)。
華やかなホワイトポップファンクといったところ、ちょっと大袈裟なホワイト“シック”。ちょっと16っぽいのを楽しみたい方には馴染みやすい、とても聴きやすい仕上がりになってます！

僕はレッドを知ったのは今から23年前。
nhk-fmで深夜11時から放送してた「クロスオーバーイレブン」と言う番組だった。
約1時間の放送の中いろんなartistの曲を掛けていた。
声優兼俳優の「つかやままさね」さんのナレーションが時々曲の間に入るというまったりしたプログラム。
そんな中イナフがある日掛かった。それは衝撃的な瞬間。
当時英国アイドルバンドを中心にしか聞いてなかった僕は雷にでも打たれたかのようだった。
それからレッドを追いかけて今日までである。
そういえば7年前にホール&オーツのアイキャントゴーフォーザットのスピンオフとも言うべき曲を彼らがシングルカットしてたのを思い出した。
