開口一番、なんだ、こりゃである。酔っぱらいが誤って録音ボタンを
押してしまい、気がついたらレコードになってしまった、とでもいうような
緊張感の無さ、腹に全く力の入っていない、へろへろで素っ頓狂な声。
その辺で自転車屋でも営んでいそうな、地味な風体のN.Y出身の男５人衆、
Clap Your Hands Say Yeahのデビュー作、はっきり言って聴き捨てならない。

サウンド自体に耳を傾けると、別段の特徴はない。シンプルで一人歩きしない
ギターと、土台に徹したリズム隊、隠し味程度に介在するキーボード。至って
普通だ。しかし、それが故に、このとんでもなく脱線したボーカルが際立ち、
ゆるゆるした曲の流れの中で、芯のあるメロディに乗り、絡まり、時にもたつき
ながらも、最終的にバンドとして調和のとれた世界を伝えている。
冒頭の“Clap Your Hands”のひっくり返った声につんのめっていると、
次の瞬間には、“Over And Over Again”の柔らかな音色に不意打ちをくらい、
続く“Details Of The War”と“The Skin Of My Yellow Country Teeth”での、
若干まともさを取り戻したかと思える歌いっぷりと心地よいメロディに
すっかり油断して聴き入ってしまった所で、次の“Is This Love?”の
よれよれ声に完全にずっこける。
振り回してごめんなさいねと、詫びでも入れんばかりの
“In THis Home On Ice”の瑞々しい奏でを耳にすれば、もう怒る気にもならない。

この際、脱力系なる新ジャンルをさっさと確立し、情熱、激情、疾走、興奮
などとは一切無縁の、もっともらしく解析したがる者達を煙に巻く様な
我が道をひょろひょろ進むが良かろう。　こればっかりは早い者勝ちなのだから。

巷ではtalking headsのDavid Byrneの再来みたいに言われているようですが、talking headsはもちろん、Ride、Smith、Raveonettesあたりが好きな人にも・・・　っていうか、「音楽が好き」という人にはどんな人にもオススメしたい！だってマジいいよ？

2005年度におけるarcade fire やlittle barrie などのような、ハイプやブームに乗ったものではない、オリジナルの文脈を持った新人。

こういうバンドがこういう時期に出てくるなんてNYの懐の広さというか、底力を感じるなあ。。。

また音作りだけでなく、バンド運営における多くの部分を幅広く自らの手で行っているそうです。そういう意味でも今後の動向に激注目！
