　再発の紙ジャケ盤が入手困難状態になっているTOTOの初期４部作、その中でもおそらく一番聴いてないアルバムでしたが、このリマスター盤のお陰をもって認識がかなり変わりました。CDの'96リマスター盤と比べてみても、こんなに躍動感があったっけというのが初めの感想でした。とりわけ、『HYDRA』のくっきりしたベースラインとドラムのシンバルの音の残り方、『９９』はメロディーの良さは以前から好きだったが、ベースのパンチがさらに抑揚をつけ、『LORRAINE』なんかは、静からアップテンポに変化する曲調がさらに強調され、静のペイチとアップのルカサーのボーカルがきまる、すごくいい曲だと再認識しました。このアルバムは、ベースラインが生命線であるにも関わらず、以前のCDやLPではくぐもった感じで勿体なかったなと感じてます。
　躍動的で重厚な音作りでは、大傑作「聖なる剣」よりも遥かにいい。このアルバムが、ホームであるアメリカで評価されなかった事が、TOTOの苦難の道のりを暗示しているようで、今ではそれが非常に残念です。

VAN HALENの劇的な登場もあってルカサーを前面に出したセールス展開がなされた2枚目。ジャケットはルカサーだという話もあれば、一方でS.PORCAROだと一時物議がありましたが、そんなの関係ない!!未だにライブの定番である‘99’‘WHITE SISTER’(2曲とも当然だけどかなり盛り上がる)をはじめ、ルカサーがレス・ポールに凝ってた極めて限定された時期の作品であり、私が思う最高のアメリカで鳴らしたレス・ポールの音をメインとしていてグイグイです！(あとは、BOZの“MIDDLE MAN”全般とCHARの“U.S.J”に入ってる‘SMOKEY’での掛け合いのソロでレス・ポールのルカサーはキマリですな!!!)
結局、1枚目や4枚目のようなのがTOTOのイメージだし実際よく売れたのですが、私は本作の「綺麗な音だけじゃないぜ、俺らロックバンドだぜ」とでも主張するようなパワーは侮れず、同様の理由でサウンド、曲としても次作“TURN BACK”も相当好きです。こうした方、結構多いのではないでしょうか。とはいえ、6枚目までは全部好きですが…。
今となってはやはり“4”からスタートする方も多いのでしょうが、1枚目との間で、ある意味埋もれがちな本作、3枚目“TURN BACK”も絶対聴き逃せないマストアイテムとしていただきたいです。

　スパーグループ「TOTO]の2枚目のアルバム、前作が大ヒットしたので前作のイメージを崩さない2番煎じのようなアルバムが出ると多くの人が予想し、それを望んだと思うのだが、このような多くのファンの予想を裏切り、万人受けする作品とはいいがたい、暗めでやや難解な前作よりもとっつきにくいアルバムを出したのは勇気があると思う。ライナーを読むと「前作は忘れてくれ、これがトトの真の意味でのデビューアルバムだ」とメンバーが話しているので出来には満足していたようだが、セールス面では前作を超えられなかったようで、シングルも「９９」が20位台まで上ったのみだった。しかし僕にはこのアルバムは前作よりも劣っているとは思えない。メンバー全員で作曲したタイトル曲はものすごい曲で、この曲の完成度は高く、トトの全ディスコグラフィーの中でも最高の部類に入る曲だと思う。ルカサーの歌う「９９」はなぜ大ヒットしなかったと不思議に思うくらいに見事なバラード、他にも「ロレイン」や「シークレットラブ」ボビーのボーカルが見事な「ママ」など聴き応えのあるナンバーが収録されている。
