ロバート･ロドリゲスは不思議な才能を感じさせる監督です。特に脚本がいいとか、絵作りがうまいとかいう才能ではない、何かがあるような気がします。こういう監督はデビュー作を観ただけでわかります。
デビュー作である｢エル･マリアッチ｣は今や伝説です。予算100万円足らずの自主制作映画です。見た目もチープなのですが、いわゆるB級ムービーとは違います。(お金使ってもB級というのもありますし･･･)
ありえないだろう、という設定とキャラクターが、これまたありえないだろう、というアクション･シークエンスとともに、この映画の中では説得力をもって一つの世界を構成しています。ハリウッドのプロデューサーでなくても、充分な予算で次作を作ってほしいと思うでしょう。その後の活躍はご存知のとおりです。
ロバート･ロドリゲスの作品は｢エル･マリアッチ｣に始まる当ボックスのデスペラード三部作以外には、｢フロム･ダスク･ティル･ドーン」、｢パラサイト｣、｢スパイキッズ」三部作があります。どれも面白いのですが、デビュー作｢エル･マリアッチ｣を完全に超えたものはないような気がします。代表作を選ぶのは非常に難しいです。
ロバート･ロドリゲスは未だ本気出していないと思います。でも、個人的にはそんなロドリゲスが好きです。(いつか本気出すのかな？)

普通に面白い作品もいいが、やはりロドリゲス映画はハードボイルドアクション作った方が断然味がでる。キメ方が一歩どころかズレすぎた野郎供のどうでもいいムサい漢の生き様にただ酔い痴れるだけ、漢ロドリゲスの節目をショッキングピンクに乗せて超安価再版。オールバックのアンちゃんが駅前でティッシュ配りながらカッコつけてる姿をクールだと思うアンタにお勧めのパック。
