2.0 out of 5 stars 巨匠のアメリカ時代を、表層的なアートとしてすくいとった作品, 2006/6/14
フランク・ロイド・ライト、ル・コルビュジエ、ヴァルター・グロピウスと共に、近代建築の四大巨匠と呼ばれる一人、ミース・ファン・デル・ローエ。彼はバルセロナ・チェア等のインテリア・デザインでも有名ですが、本作は活動拠点をドイツからアメリカに移した後の活躍に絞って取り上げています。
最晩年に設計したというガソリンスタンドが風景にひっそり溶け込む佇まいから始まって、柱の無いガラスで覆われたような高層ビル郡、モダン建築が確立される以前の処女作とされる住宅などが、影響を受けたと思しき建築家たちのコメントと共に紹介されます。

それにしても、一時間という短さもあってか、人物伝としても建築解説としても中途半端な食い足りなさが否めません。サウンドトラックに賑やかなジャズのトランペットの即興が使われていますが、目新しい現代的な建築物によってシカゴの街の風景が様変わりしていく躍動感を暗に表現しているだけで、紹介される建築や建築家の本質に果たしてマッチするものだろうかと首を傾げました。
この作品の製作者はどうやらおしゃれなアート・ドキュメンタリーを目指しているのだろうと思いましたが、そのせいかモダニズム建築の表面的なガラスや金属の輝きにばかり気をとられているようです。ミースの提唱したLess is Moreといったデザイン思想に触れられることもないため、上辺だけで深く探求するような姿勢が感じられず、観終わっても心に残るものがありませんでした。
本作のようなドキュメンタリーの映像作品は数少なく、芸術家や建築家の全貌を手っ取り早く理解できることを期待していますが、その一部分すら得るものがなく残念です。

なかなか直接訪ねる機会も少ないので、名建築を映像で見られて感激です。鉄骨とガラスそのものの美しさ。ことにシカゴのレイクショア・ドライヴ・アパート、ニューヨークのシーグラム・ビルのシャープな撮影とリズムのいい編集は圧巻で、いっけん普通の直方体がこれほどまでに美しい細部を抱くことにビックリしました。まさに機能それ自体が内包する美、とでも言いましょうか。ミースの下で働いていた建築士たちの談話も寡黙だったという師の人となりを伝えて興味深いものがあります。常に「もっと考えろ」と言われた、って。なぜか登場してインタビューに答えるレム・コールハースはなんか難しいこと言っててよく分からないんですけど（笑）、その存在感はさすが？　リーフレットに載っていた、日本人で唯一、ミースの事務所で働いた渡邉明次先生のお話も面白かったです。
