　妙な名前とジャケットの絵にひかれてレンタルＣＤ屋さんで出会ったのが最初の出会い。聴いてビックリ！！「なんなんだこの音楽は！！」コミックバンドかとも思いましたが、どうやらそうでもなさそう・・・それから数年後、存在を忘れかけていたころに、偶然ライブに行く機会があり、それがきっかけですっかりその魅力のとりこに！！まさに子どもからお年寄りまで。いろんな世代、国籍の人が一つになって盛り上がれる空間を体験できたのは上々颱風のライブがはじめてでした。「上々颱風のテーマ」や「仏の顔もＩＴ’Ｓ　ＡＬＬ　ＲＩＧＨＴ」、「ハイ・ハイ・ハイ」などを聴くと、半ばおっかけ状態でライブに行きまくっていた頃のことを思い出します。

収録全12曲中、Ｔ3・Ｔ5・Ｔ10が自主制作で発売された「上々颱風8」よりの選曲。その後、おおたか静流などが所属するＭ＆Ｉと契約し発売された2001年の9作目より、Ｔ4・Ｔ6・Ｔ9。2005年の10作目よりＴ7・Ｔ8・Ｔ11。それ以前のエピック・ソニー時代の曲はＴ1・2・12の3曲のみ。「名曲撰」と銘打たれているものの、実質後期3作からのベスト選曲にソニー時代からのいわゆる「有名曲」を追加したものです。他にも数あるエピック時代の作品が収録されていないのは、版権の関係でしょうか、或いは意図したものか。
シャンシャンの歴史をベストで追うならむしろ「パラダイス・ライブ」を。
この「名曲撰」はむしろ、最初の3,4作目以降離れてしまった、かつてのファンの聴いてみてほしい。中期確かに間延びした作品が続いたけれど、近作は充実しています。特に、郷子さんのＶｏと、陽子さんのＰ，西村氏のコントラバスの3人だけで奏でられるＴ11「青空」。涙出ますよ。

この中で知っている曲が二曲だけという者です。

子供の頃『Let It Be』をビートルズ原曲とも知らずに何かのコンピ？で聴いていました。
当時は子供ながらに「何だこの感覚は〜」という感じで聴いていたと思います。

今なら、「沖縄っぽい」みたいな言葉が出てきそうですが、何かそれだけではないという思いも同時に抱いています。
印象としては沖縄感が大きいけれど、中国や東南アジア、中東に勿論日本も入ったミクスチャーでしょうか。
しかもただの混沌としたミクスチャーではなく、一つの作品として破綻してないというか、上手くまとまっている気がします。

思い浮かぶ風景は心地好い風が通り過ぎる沖縄の自然。
でもそこは本当の沖縄ではなくて、曲を聴く事で描かれる心象風景。

そんな感じです。
分かってもらえるでしょうか…

長々書いてしまいましたがこれは一部分のことで、政治的な曲、神秘的な曲など内容はバラエティに富んでいます。
まぁ、ベスト盤は大抵そうですが、大勢いるであろう私のような「ほぼ」初心者や「名前は良く聞くけど…」という方にはうってつけだと思いますよ。
（でも、『アジアのこの街で』でしたっけ？これはベストに選ばれなかったのかなぁ？『名曲撰２』が出れば入るのかも）
