パーカーことバードはジャズファンからも「録音の悪さ」や「フレーズが非感情的」という先入観から、偉大ではありますが敬遠されがちなジャズミュージシャンの１人です。私もジャズを聴き初めの頃、このアルバムを購入しましたが、さっぱり良さ・凄さがわからず、４０年代の録音ということもあってパチパチするのが嫌いでした。しかしせっかく購入したのだからというせこい考えから聴き続けていくうち、どんなに録音の音が悪くてもバードのサックスだけはくっきりと浮かび上がり、それこそ「レッドクロス」のようなテンポの速い曲でも「ナウズ・ザ・タイム」のようなゆったりとしたブルースでも、バードは自由奔放に独特の太く柔らかい音色でアドリブを吹きまくっていることに気づき、そこからはパーカーの他のアルバムも買い捲り、パーカーにますます引かれる一方です。他のアルバムもよく聴くのですが、必ずといっていいほど、このサボイのマスター２枚組やダイアル盤に戻ってきますので、パーカーを聞こうと思っているなら絶対必聴・必携です。
