djangoはどうもカタストロフへ向かう性質があったんじゃないだろうか、という事を彼の演奏に接していてよく感じる。加えてこの種のジャズマンに多い特徴として、精神的にスランプな時期と調子のいい時期のムラが激しいこと、だろうか。

djangoにもたびたびスランプがあったのはよく知られている話。ただ、彼のスランプ期の演奏と言うのはダラダラと間延びしたような、モチベーションの感じられないという態のものではなく、むしろその逆でメーターの針を振り切ってそのまま彼方まで飛び退ってしますような、そういう危うい印象を与える。

この盤は４７年、ビバップ盛りの時期に録られた２つのセッションを集めたもの。クラリネットのhubert rostaingと２人で実質フロントに立ち、バックはリズムギター＋リズムの３名に任せられる。よくrostaingの粋な演奏が前面に出た佳作と評されるが、この盤のような俗に云われる“体調の悪い”djangoをこそ聴いて欲しい。rostaingと一体化してうねりまくる壮絶なアドリヴが全曲に渡って聴かれる。rostaingはモダン以前から活動するプレイヤーだが、どこで身につけたか後のクールジャズで聴かれるようなアブストラクトな感覚がしっかりと備わっている。当時のクールクラといえばtristanoの弟子john laportaくらいしか思い浮かばない。そんな中にあってこの盤で堪能できる一種独特のクールサウンドは貴重だ。
