本作より、ベーシストとしてティモシー・B・シュミットが参加。ダークな官能美に包まれた70年代最後のアメリカン・ドリームを体現する実質上のラスト・アルバム。
（1979年／第6作目／全米アルバム・チャート：９週連続第１位）

【プロフィール】
1971年リンダ・ロンシュタットのバック・バンドで顔合わせしたグレン・フライ、バーニー・リードン、ランディ・マイズナー、ドン・ヘンリーの4人で結成。72年ファースト・シングル「テイク・イット・イージー｣、アルバム『イーグルス・ファースト』のヒットにより、一躍ウエスト・コースト・ロックの代表的な存在となる。74年3作目の『オン・ザ・ボーダー』完成後、レコーディングに参加していたドン・フェルダーが正式メンバーに。75年バーニー・リードンが脱退、代ってジョー・ウォルシュが加入。そして76年歴史的名盤『ホテル・カリフォルニア』をリリース。77年オリジナル・メンバーであったランディ・マイズナー脱退。ティモシー・Ｂ・シュミットが正式メンバーとなる。79年発表の『ロング・ラン』発表。80年ロング・ラン・ツアーを中心とした初のライヴ・アルバムをリリースするが、バンドは事実上休止状態に。82年5月正式に解散が発表される。

Eaglesのラストアルバム。前作Hotel Californiaと比較すると、どうしても地味ですが、Eaglesらしい情緒的な作品が並んでいます。力の抜けた感じとういうか、夜が明けて明るくなりつつある、盛り場の閑散とした感じというか、とにかく解散前のバンドのテンションが感じられる作品。
heartache Nightを筆頭にヒット曲も収められており、いいアルバム。個人的には最後の曲「Sad Cafe」がおすすめ。これこそこのバンドの最後の1曲という感じがします。

イーグルスのラスト・アルバム (再結成後を除く)。重圧で完成度が高い歴史的名盤、ホテルカリフォルニアの後だけにそういった完成度を期待され、一曲目のタイトル曲の脱力加減にがっかりした当時のファンの気持ちは分からないでもないですが、この肩の力を抜いた感じが好きで個人的にはこちらのアルバムの方を聴くことが多いです。そんなわけで発売当初からの慣例で酷評されることが多いのですが、実際にはそれほど悪いわけがあるはずもなく、タイトル曲や有終の美に相応しいラストの Sad Cafe などは本当に心に残る名曲です。同じく肩の力を抜いた感じの IN THE CITY、映画、ドリーミングにも使用されたティモシー作のバラード、 言い出せなくて (I CAN'T TELL YOU WHY) など充実した内容を誇り、さんざんイーグルスを聴くとこのアルバムが残る・・・って感じです。

本作は、イーグルスがホテル・カリフォリニアでウェスト・コースト・ロックの頂点を極めた後、周囲の多大な期待というプレッシャーの中で完成させた作品。ホテル・カリフォルニアに比べるとアルバム全体のトータル・メッセージ性や名曲充実度の点で劣る（例えばディスコ・ブームを題材にした曲としては本作Ｍ４より、同時期のジャクソン・ブラウンのディスコ・アポカリプスの方が優れている）のは確かである。それでもＭ１、Ｍ２、Ｍ３、Ｍ６、Ｍ１０といった佳曲を世に出してイーグルスの７０年代の一連のスタジオ録音の名作群の最後を飾ったのはさすがとしか言いようがない。特にタイトル曲とＭ３が私は好きだ。中でも「イン・ザ・シティ」はジョー・ウォルシュが自分で曲を作り歌うスケールの大きな、実にかっこいい曲。私の約３０年前の記憶が正しければ、ウォルター・ヒル監督の映画「ウォリアーズ」に使われたはず（間違っていたらごめんなさい）。もしかするとジョー・ウォルシュの活躍の幅を広げることに、イーグルスの新路線開拓の可能性があったのではと思うが、残念ながら本作でジョーの活躍が光るのはこの１曲だけである。ラストの「サッド・カフェ」もしみじみと心に染みる味わいがあり、「テイク・イット・イージー」から始まった７０年代イーグルス名作群の有終の美を飾るにふさわしい曲である。結論として、プレッシャーをはね返してここまでクォリティーの高い作品を完成させ、自らの７０年代傑作群にピリオドをうったイーグルスに敬意・感謝の気持ちを抱かせる、そういう作品である。
