90年代にずば抜けた歌唱力で最高のポジションを極め、21世紀に入ると共にどん底まで落とされたアメリカを代表するディーヴァ、マライア・キャリー。それでも少しずつ人気を取り戻してはきていたが、もはや音楽の内容、人気共に復活は不可能だと誰からも思われていたはずだ。

だが、今年のリリースのタイミングが良かった為に、予想もせぬ大ヒットを記録することとなる。2004年のUSHERに提供した3曲のシングルが全て全米1位を記録したジャーメイン・デュプリはマライアと10年以上も製作面でタッグを組むパートナーだ。そのジャーメイン・デュプリがメイン・プロデューサーとなった今作は当然注目を集めることとなる。

ファーストシングルのIT'S LIKE THATはそこそこのヒットに留まったが、アルバムが過去最高の初動売り上げを記録して以来、セカンドシングルのWE BELONG TOGETHERは飛躍的に順位を上げ、通算14週間の全米1位を記録し、自身2番目の記録を樹立。さらに、サードシングルのSHAKE IT OFFは全米2位を記録。アルバムの2回の全米1位を記録し、米国のみで2005年現在で350万枚を記録するという、全盛期に準ずる成功を手にした。

今回はそのスペシャルエディションで、4枚目のシングルの予定となるジャーメイン・デュプリ製作の新曲のバラードや、WE BELONG TOGETHERのDJ CLUE(自身の全米NO'1ソング・HEARTBREAKERの作者）がREMIXしたバージョンなど、数曲の未発表曲が収録されていることが注目されている。これでまたセールスを伸ばしてしまうのは間違いないだろう。

年間売上のアルバム、シングルの２冠を達成しそうな勢いのマライア。年の瀬の静かな朝の町ですっきり晴れ渡った空を見上げながら、We Belong Togetherを聞くと､この曲のメロディーがどれほど切なく胸をうつかとてもよくわかる。音数は少ないのに、マライアの声がいくつものメロディーを奏でている。この曲のリミックスや新曲をプラスしたこのエディションは、すでに買ってる人も、いや、すでにもっているからこそまた購入するべき一枚といえるでしょう。

マライア奇跡の大復活作品。ってことになってる。売れたしね。曲も最近のマライアよりははるかにいい。でも僕はこのアルバム評価できません。ボーカルがひどすぎる。歌っていうより悲鳴。金切り声。声量のある宇多田ヒカルって感じ。このちょっとでも声を張ろうもんなら耳を突き刺す悲鳴なんとかならんの？歌唱力が売りなんじゃないの？曲書けるっていったって鼻歌レベルだろうし。これじゃとてもヘビロテする気になれません。蟹江さんは相変わらず女性ミュージシャンとの相性抜群ですね。蟹江さんの仕事ぶりに敬意を表して甘甘の星４つ。
